wheelbarrow race

I'm in Chillagoe now after being a marshall on the wheelbarrow race from Mareeba to Chillagoe - a total of over 140kms.  I feel like I've pushed a barrow all the way.  I was in a vehicle with a different team each day & my job as marshall was to oversee safety aspects, rule adherence & time allowed stops.  The first 2 days my teams each had 9 runners so they each run for 15 seconds & then we stopped & a quick changeover took place.  I tell you going that distance stopping every 15 seconds is a bit tiring.  At least today my team had only 3 barrow pushers so they each ran about 3 minutes before changeover.  There were over 50 teams & one old codger of 75 ran all the way as a solo runner.  What a champion.  We'll stay here for a couple of days in the rodeo grounds.  I was born in Chillagoe & my great grand parents are buried here

15 second change overs, they would have only walked a few steps Alice. Sounds like you had fun though and you are in one piece, better still. As for the 75 year old, I don't think I will be like that at that age.

Doug In that 15 seconds each runner jogged fast pushing their barrow. For example today - over 30kms - & done in under 3hrs

I remember in th early 70s , a bloke I worked for , claimed he could push a

wheelbarrow to Melbourne & deliver a parcel from Sydney , Quicker than

Aust Post . A relay of blokes pushed th barrow down th Hume .

AND Beat th Post office to deliver a parcel th same size . BY THREE days .

I am still fascinated by wheelbarrow events . Thanks for mentioning this one.

Richo.
