heading north

Glorgeo, George and Gloria are heading north from Toowoomba,We are going via Roma.Springsure, Emerald, Charters Towers thru to Townsville.

Can anyone advise us is this is the best way or is there a better way with better road conditions. We have a Landcruiser ute with an 8 met fifth wheeler attached.

You will enjoy all of that journey.
we came south on the route about 3/4 weeks ago and the countryside looks great, roads are good. You'll probably not find a van park space in Emerald. There's quite a nice and inexpensive stop at the roadhouse in Springsure, would suggest booking in and confirm they can fit your rig.
highly recommend the pie with mushy peas at the Clermont bakery.
safe journey!

.. There are still some roadworks ongoing between Charters Towers and Greenvale (north of Fletchers Creek) ..

Road is open again now .. but make inquiries should you run into heavy rains prior to reaching that area ..

You will find the caravan parks very busy Glorgeo. Unless you plan to free-camp (Those camps will be busy too) then book ahead. We were on part of that road a few weeks ago and its ordinary, but ok. Just drive to the conditions, take it easy. Theres quite a lot of trucks and a few road trains too. If you have a UHF radio keep tuned to channel 40 and you'll be warned of road trains and wide loads. Well worth it though, beautiful countryside! The Bruce highway is "under construction"... such a lot of roadworks all the way, its not an alternative.

We would be heading north too, that is when we get the reansmission back into the bus. Got the tranmission serviced by someone claiming to be an expert except it appears he has replaced  a wrong part. The results of no oiling of planentry gears should be fixed after about $10,000 for  transmission rebuild.

Hi Glorgeo ..

To select a file, you must start in your "user details" ..

Under "PROFILES" on the L/H/Side, select "AVATAR" ..

Follow instructions there to select your 'chosen' file from its location on your computer .. (so you must find this out before-hand) ..

confuse Hi Glorgeo and welcome to the forum, We are currently doing basically the same trip as you have stated at the moment there are some roadwork's but nothing major and all roads are open and at present we are in Townsville and are staying for about two weeks prior to heading to Cairns and Cooktown we are in the van and tug shown in our avatar.

there are some very good free-camps along the way especially once you cross into Queensland In Charters towers we stayed at the Family Parks Caravan Park which was good and in Townsville we have found a good camp area at a conference centre run by the Seventh Day Adventist's at $24.00 per night or $21.00 if staying seven days when other parks are $35 plus and much more noisy.

The roads all the way from Moree north have been good and as others have mentioned if you use uhf 40 most of the truckies are very good and let you know when they are coming up to pass and they will also keep you updated on road conditions.

Enjoy your trip the weather is beautiful and the sunsets on Castle Mountain in Townsville are spectacular. biggrinbiggrin

There are three members heading up that way at the moment, left emerald & had only gone as far as Capella when I spoke to them a couple of days back & said it was very rough & wet.

Hi Glorgeo

Details are 45-59 Leopold Street Townsville
Phone (07) 4779 6708
cost $25.00 per night
stay week and seventh night free which equates to $21.00 Per night.
Managers Danny & Raylene

They have a conference starting there next week not sure how long it lasts but its a great location closest park to the city and on the banks of the Ross River which has some great walkways on both sides and no noise.

Well done fellow Nomads!!!!!
The advice about monitoring channel 40 UHF is one of my pet issues.
With so much heavy and oversize traffic on the road, it's very important to observe all activity every way you can. The radio is the best. Call up the truck behind you and let them know you've seen them.
