Truck Stops

I was checking out the Qld transport site re:- Towing with an A frame.

There was an earlier post re Truck stops and Grey Nomads.

I don't want to start a controversy but the law is quite clear. If you are towing with an A frame you are obliged to use truck parking bays when out of town.

I normally use the parking areas at various places on the highways and have on the odd occasion used Truck bays and tried to stay out of the way to allow trucks to get in and out easily.

Page eleven of the regs 'Towing  with an A Frame.' says you have to use truck parking bays.

Doesn't make it easy does it if you comply.

Hi,

It's Surprising when you start measuring stuff.

My RV/ Motorhome is 7.2 metres,allow 1.5 for the A frame and 3.7 for the Suzuki and you have nearly 12 metres.

My RV weighs nearly eight tons unladen and the Suzuki comes in at 1700 Kgs.

I doubt that I would get prosecuted for parking in a normal rest stop but as the legislation says "truck bay or other area set aside for goods vehicles". it just creates confusion.

I also find it very strange that  truck drivers and coach drivers have very strict fatigue management rules but Heavy vehicles such as motorhomes be it RV or Bus /Coach conversions and although you require the Heavy vehicle driver's licence we slip through the cracks with fatigue management rules.

I try to make sure I always stop driving if I'm tired and doubly so if I'm alone in the RV.

It's in my best interests and that of other road users too.As I have no timetable being retired I can take as long as I want to get from A to B.

I think the document you are referring to is this http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/a2570893-dd8b-4446-8ca1-a43bcd5caf57/safe_towing_information_v2.pdf. The relevant passage is the following:

Stopping on carriageways - If your vehicle or combination is longer than 7.5m or has a total mass of more than 4.5t you may not:
o stop on a carriageway in a built up area for longer than one hour unless engaged in picking up or setting down goods; or
o stop on a carriageway outside a built up area except on a hard shoulder or in a truck bay or other area set aside for parking of goods vehicles.

The section containing this refers ONLY to towing a motor vehicle with an a-frame, not to towing a caravan or trailer. The parking restriction given above also says it only applies when the total length of the rig is above 7.5m or more than 4.5t. I'm not sure, but I think that most motorhomes with vehicle towed behind would be less than this (wouldn't they??)
