Monaro Highway conditions during July

Hi Folks,

Sorry about what may be a dumb question.  My wife and I plan to go from Canberra down to Bega via Cooma using the Manoaro Highway during mid to late July.  Could someone please tell me if there is any requirement for snow or tyre chains (I think that's what they call them) on that road during that time of the year?

Thanks in advance.

Rudy

Welcome Rudy. Just listen to the weather report. On the rare occasion you can need snow chains on Brown Mountain (between Nimmitabel and Bemboka - the Snowy Mtn Hwy) but usually the road is fine. It would have to be a very big dump of snow for snow on the Monaro Hwy to Cooma.

Yes, agree with neilnruth. I cant remember there ever being snow on that road, but Brown mountain can get icy at times of frost, which would be very slippery!

Thanks for the extra info Gerty Dancer. Something that should definitely be kept in mind. I guess that the alternative would be to head east to the coast and just head south. My interim destination is Tura Beach. Cheers Rudy

In which case you could do Clyde Mtn to Batemans Bay and head down the coast. It is now sealed all the way from Bermagui to Tathra and then through to Tura. It does get very cold at Nimmitabel regardless of the month!

I really appreciate the responses from all of you.  It has been most informative.  I am definitely leaning towards going to Batemans Bay and taking the route south from there.
