Which way to go????

Hi all I am currently in Cairns and in a week or so I'm hoping to go to Mt Surprise to see the Lava Tubes etc. From there my thoughts are: do I go from there out to Normanton and down to Cloncurry, Mt Isa etc. Or do I go to Mt Isa via the Flinders Hwy. I'm a (female) solo traveller towing a van. I've been on the road for two months now but have just travelled up the east coast, so haven't really needed to worry about road conditions etc Can anyone give me any ideas on, I guess the best/safest way to go.

Its a few years since we were up that way and things change every wet season up north. Go and talk to the helpful people in the Cairns visitor centre... they'll have up-to-date info. They have made phone calls to other towns for us, to check on road conditions, its a great service.

Local coppers are usually pretty helpful with road and traffic conditions .

I would agree. Even though I have used livetraffic website, we found it far better when in doubt to ring the local police who have assured us the local roads were all OK.

Tania 63.

Just recently been across the top from Cairns to Normanton. The roads are pretty good most of the way with a few road work stoppages. Some narrow bitumin but take it easy and get off when passing and all should be ok.

Fuel is available at Normanton at "The Traders" complex just off the main street to the east. First turn right after the Butchers shop on the right going into town. $!.61.9 c. per l.

Food store also. Take on enough fuel to get to Cloncurry if you can, Gets dearer as you head south.
Cloncurry was dearer by nearly a dollar.

Winton had diesel for 1.50 c. per l early June.

We were up there in the last lot of rain and that spoilt our plans somewhat.

Have fun Haji-Baba.
