From my research to date as well as electric brakes fitted to the vehicle you may also need a 12V hotwire from your vehicle to the van for running the fridge while on the move.

It is also recommended by what I have read to make sure you have a circuit breaker for the hot wire so when you turn the ignition off it cuts the power from your car battery to your van fridge, otherwise if you stop too long you could get a flat vehicle battery......

I am only repeating what I have read on the subject, those experienced here can tell you better than I can my comments are only from research, not experience.

My vehicle is set up to charge the van's house batteries whilst traveling via an Anderson Plug.....might want to consider that option too Michelle.

Personally, I would only ever run a Fridge on 12V, from House Batteries.  Solar of course.   [ I like things simple.]

Cheers,

Sheba.

My research to date is that most caravans are wired for 12V powering of the fridge and charging the house battery via the vehicle battery while on the move including campervans. Battery Banks and Solar may be ok for when stationary, but I don't think that applies while travelling on the road if you want the fridge to work while on the move.

I wouldn't fancy doing a few hundred kilometres trip with perishables in the fridge only to arrive and find the fridge hasn't been working during the trip.

Perhaps some caravanners or those with a motor home can elaborate on how theirs is set up, I don't have either at the moment, just learning.....

Michelle

 Gday...

Pic of bullbar, with brush bars and side steps for Ford Ranger.

The brush bars are the ones from the bull bar up front joining to the side steps. (although these look like overkill to me)

[edit: brush bars are to help in the bush so that if when negotiating a rough, rutted track, and the vehicle rocks sideways it will protect the fenders (mudguards) from the bush etc and/or help to keep the 'brush' off the paintwork of the front of the vehicle when going down tight overgrown tracks.]

Cheers - John

I thought you might like to see my new vehicle that we just ordered today.  I am happy with our purchase - It is a 2010 Ford Ranger 4x4 Diesel with rear canopy and 20,000kms on the clock.  Also has a tow bar fitted and bull bar at the front.  We will be getting side steppers put on and electric brake kit for the van as well.  Can't think of anything else at the moment *grins* .  This means we are one step closer to heading out into the wide blue yonder!!

when starting a topic or replying to one you will see a selection of emoticons one the top left of the page, just leave your cursor where you want to insert the grin and click the emoticons, just like this biggrinbiggrincrysmileconfusenoyawnblehevileye

Hey Wombat, I am so used to typing grins it is a habit and I always forget to use the emoticons to be honest I know they are there but because I type 90 wpm it is easier to keep typing than stop to put a smiley in biggrin

disbeliefno  I know about the Ford thing but we have owned one before and it was a good car so what can I say smile.  We currently have a Holden and I will be awfully glad to get rid of it wink

I do like your choice of tug Michelle, you and the other half should get there and back in that beast, that's for sure. Have fun out there. All you need now is something to hook on the back.

Congratulations..This is good Michelle....now you have your vehicle you now know what weight van you can get.

I am pretty sure your 2010 Ford Ranger has a braked towing capacity of 3000kg but youll need to double check that before you buy your van.

The 27 footer you have been looking at might be over that limit. Again youll need to check.

Things must be getting pretty exciting for you now.this is a great journey you are on.

And don't worry about the Ford Badge ! as I think they are really a Re-badged Mazda, so that has got to be good ??

And now you have the vehicle, you have the weights and towing capacities that you need to work within, when choosing the van, that vehicle gives you a wide choice, so take your time, don't rush, Get It Right ??? and keep asking those questions. OK  Daryl.   [ oops i mean dazren ]

PS. is it Manual or Auto ?????

"Celebrity model 4X,"

Does this mean it's a 4x4 dazren? and I will take no notice of your fibs. Wombat is a wakeup to you.

I hope you can sell the scooter soon mate. I had to do all that for my dad as well about 8 years ago. I also had to sell his house for him when he was in a nursing home, boy, was that hard.

The charging is from the vehicle's alternator Cropper, not the vehicle's battery.  My van fridge is a dedicated 12 volt; it is charged via an Anderson plug from the alternator when traveling and via solar panels when stationary.

 Hi Boroma,

Yep the 27 footer has definitely been sold so that is out now.  We are looking at a van around the 24 ft mark as that seems to be the size that has what we want.  It can also be towed by the Ford.  You are right the Ford has an ATW of 3000kgs.

Gday...

Baroma577 .... not sure I understand ... and will gladly defer to those wiser than I .... but, I would be fairly sure the Anderson Plug, powering the 12v fridge would be through either the tug cranking battery - or an auxiliary battery. I doubt if it would be hardwired from the alternator to the Anderson Plug therefore to the 12V fridge.

Because if the alternator is not charging (eg when vehicle engine is turned off) then there would be NO power at all for the 12v fridge.

cheers - John

As great as it is being out there on the road traveling, there is something very special about initial set up, decision making and planning stages.  I do still remember mine.

Hi Dazren lol, rebadged Mazdas hey. . . . not sure about that one hehe.

I know I have to take my time but all I want to do is run out there and get one but seriously I have been researching for the last couple of years even when I wasn't so serious about it all lol.  I think as I said earlier that a 24 footer would do us nicely not too big and not too small.  You know I will keep asking the questions I am an inquisitive little bugger!!!

It is 5 speed manual (bugger) so that means Ray will be doing most of the driving  wink, you know have to worry about the knees and all aww

I think what I might do Boroma is collate all the info and make a decision based on what we have learnt from this forum, as all the info so far is valid and worthy, thanks so much.

You are so right Boroma there is something special about finding all the info and getting quotes and pricing and sourcing it all.  Spins my head as it is like a rollercoaster now gathering momentum lol, nevertheless real good fun to do it all.
