Know what you mean Barrie, I'm a Big4 member but do think they are probably the dearest chain around. I'm starting to wonder if it's worth renewing later this year.

We gave Big 4 away a year ago after we were convinced that they 'put it on to take it off" with the discount. We now go to Independents whenever we can and do a lot more free camping. They will lose out in the long run.

IMHO Big 4 have always been too expensive, great park if you have kids but most GN's do not want all that they supply, power and water is all most people need, that's why I choose to free camp whenever I can, I take my own power and water.
As some of you already know we have just finished a house sit at Goomalling WA, 50klm from Toodjay, the local caravan park is always busy, and why I hear you all say, here's why, if you are a pensioner or senior card holder you only pay, now wait for it, $10.00 a night with power and water and very clean showers, yes you did hear me correctly $10.00 a night, know wonder they are always busy, phone to make a booking b4 you get there.
Yes and we have showgrounds charging from $15 to caravan park prices for power and water and poor shower and toilets , There are lots of good park operators out there has well
Thanks for that link wombat, I checked it out and it does look good value even at the '' normal'' price of $20 for a pwr site, But if you are a pensioner, senior, or member of a caravan club, you get 50% discount,
It is definately on my stop-off list when i get to that area, $70 for a week to explore the area from there. or around $240 a week at Big 4 ???
Thanks wombat you do come back with some good feedback, don't you !
Looks like I will be getting the 50% discount being on a disability pension which is good. I don't tend to use the pension card much makes me feel old . . . .yeah yeah call it vanity I don't care lol. But will put this park on my list of places to stay thanks Wombat it is always good to have personal recommendations from people you trust. Michelle
We canceled our big 4 membership about 3yrs back after an unprovoked agressive outburst buy the female receptionist. Other guests were receiving the same treatment so I reported this to the big4 management.

Goomalling also has a large enclosed camp kitchen which has a full size stove with oven & microwave as well as the usual jug, toaster and cooking equipment. They have tables and chairs inside as well as more outside under a covered area with a BBQ. At $10 night it was a real bargain especially after paying $52 per night at Karratha.
The Big 4 is targetting families and kids, which is a good reason to avoid them. Not that I don't like kids, it's just that some little darlings are not very well trained for proper behaviour in public. It seems the show grounds might be leading the way. The Top Tourist Parks have always been good value, and most are very well managed by nice managers. First City in Cairns probably had the grumpiest owners, but generally I've had good experiences at Top.

I see that Dougwe has been a up to his tricks again, I'll have to have a word with him, or maybe send him to the naughty corner.
BTW, the Goomelling CP has a go cart track right at the back of it, we were in the area for a month and it was only used one Saturday afternoon, so try to check if you plan on going when the track is in operation, but you could always go for a drive that day to see the local area.
We found most of the c'parks in north WA last year were about $40 per night. We stayed at a big4 only one night during the whole 5 months, they are not the only expensive ones.
I agree Gerty but some were a lot dearer. We need a voice that will be heard because country towns will be the losers if nomads avoid them because off greed
There are several parks in the Hervey Bay area and rather than whinge we can simply exercise the customers prerogative of going elsewhere. Competition will sort out the over-chargers.
I recently renewed my Big4 but sometimes I wonder why as I don't use it often. I regularly use Top Tourist parks as well as independents but this is more a matter of convenience rather than any sense of brand loyalty.
It's normal for any business (including caravan parks) to seek to maximise the return on their investment and let's face it we're no different. When we invest our money we seek the best return, are we being greedy for so doing?
