Go for a laptop computer. I have met people with Ipads, they can't upload photos for some reason. Also I found very hard to see the screen, Not as clear as the laptop.

Thanks for that as I too have an old notebook running xp and was wondering whether to "upgrade" to an Isomething. I think I'll stick with this for the time being.

By the way, why did the pirate go into the Apple shop?

.... He wanted to buy an IPatch!

Hi Jimbo, the answer to your question really depends upon what you need from each one. The laptop will handle photos, etc better as far as storage is concerned along with Internet is concerned but is a little less portable than an iPad. The laptop has all the connection ports that you need to perform what you need it to do such as USB, printer access, external hard drives for extended storage and back up. The iPad on the other hand is more portable and lends its self to things like GPS and other nav aids apps. While on the subject of apps there is an amazing amount of apps that will allow a greater application of use. For instance, I found an app that will allow me to find the nearest tv transmitter to my location. Other apps for all sorts of needs. So there it is, it all depends upon your greatest application that will determine which way you should go. I have both to give me the answer to most of my needs and it works well. Mind you I did not buy the iPad it was my retirement present from the radio station I was at. Have fun Brian

Go into an Apple shop and ask them to show you what you can do with an IPad then you can make your judgement

Personally I would wait till Windows 8 comes out in Sept.

I believe it has been designed to access all the android type 'Apps' and to make it more compatible with those programs.

Might be worth checking that out and seeing if it is worth waiting till Sept.

Hi Jimbo, I have a desktop computer, an iphone and an ipad 3. Before we go on the road I will be increasing my ifamily and buying a macbook as well for those things that the ipad cannot do for me. But I will tell you that since I have had my ipad (about three months) I have not bought a novel to read as I go to the Apple store and spend around $8.00 to download the books that I want and I read them on my ipad. I have read sixteen books in the last three months alone and prior to that I worked in a library so I am an avid reader but I didn't read that volume over that period of time. I absolutely 100 percent adore my ipad and the apps you can download on them is amazing. There is an app for almost anything now. I know my daughter who is a photographer has taken pics on her ipad and she must be able to get them off there so I will ask her how she does it and let you know.
As someone else said each item has its pros and cons it just depends on what you expect from them that will help you decide.

Ipads and tablets are great and you can easily access stuff with them at times when it is not convenient to set up the laptop or netbook.

If I were to choose one it would be a 10 inch netbook. Around half the price of the Ipad. That's what I use at home and it does the job well. I put extra ram in it and have a portable dvd recorder. I also have an android tablet and android phone but I do have a lot of respect for the apple products.

I use Ubuntu Linux and have an intense dislike for MS Windows. The Apple Operating System is based on Linux.

I just googled this photo from ipad problem to Windows and came up with this site

http://www.phototransferapp.com/ipad/

I have not used this app, as I don't have an iPad, I'll stick with my laptops and desktops

Thank you from me too... our kids love these i-thingys and have been trying to persuade us to get them, but we have been doubtful, especially about the photo uploading. And I'm still not sure what "android" means.. presumably able to function on both systems?.
Not ready to upgrade yet, PC and laptop both still newish.

Hi Jimbo.

I have to admit that I have been tempted by an iPad and would get one if I could think of a use for it.

I use the computer all day long, working on the website that so many of you are now visiting and joining. (Closing in on 10,000 hits per month after just 6 months). Sorry... I just can't help myself. biggrin.gif

The thing is, I need a powerful computer, but when I am travelling I can only justify having a laptop.

But I found the best compromise of all. I have a Mac Book Pro 15" and a 24" screen that plugs into it. (See pic)

When I have to travel light, or if I don't have power available, I just use the laptop. But when I need a large screen, I just plug it in and away I go. It is every bit as good as having a box and a large screen.

When the big screen is plugged in, it supplies the power to the laptop, keeping its battery charged and powering the computer. The big screen also has 3 USB ports as well as a camera, microphone and sound. Great for Skype!

I use a Magic Mouse which is a laser mouse but the top surface works like a track pad. It is smart enough to know the difference between 1 finger movement and 2 fingers, utilising these for different purposes. A very productive little rodent.

When you purchase both the laptop and the large screen together, if you also purchase extended warranty it covers both the computer and the screen.

I have been using this for a couple of years now and I am stoked to my hump with it.

Hope that helps.

Gary and I take a laptop and an ipad when we travel. As others have mentioned the PC is better for photos and writing. The ipad is great for internet access and downloads. When we did our 12 month trip I purchased a 12 month telstra internet package for my ipad for $150. this gave me a 14gig download. Did not use it all. Worked out much cheaper than the dongle for a PC. I am on my ipad at the moment, I find it portable, instant load up and shut down But again it is personal choice and what you use your computers for. I think it is a personal choice but our son says iPads are limited in their overall use. Laptop will give you more. Sounds like Golivers travels have it covered well.

Hey Milo I just purchased the bracket to turn your iphone into a video camera for only 2.30 bargain price and apparently they will be bringing one out if not already for the ipad as well.

Just thought you may want to know.

I have not used my laptop since I purchased my iPad, I have an iPhone as well and can transfer photos and video easy, i can print from it using wireless printer which is great cause you dont need any wire or cables. the only thing I can't do is use a CD drive. 10 hours use before you charge it, lightweight, compact, doesn't get hot like laptop, built in GPS. Thousands of apps. If you are outside in the sunlight you can turn up the screen brightness. Love it

My main comment is that since I moved to Apple Mac laptop nearly 8 yrs ago and more recently an iPhone and iPad I have not had a need for the Valium, straight whiskey and other calming agents necessary when using a PC. When I had the business, the number of times the computer would freeze/crash at a critical moment was endless. My son tried to talk me into changing to Mac for years and I fought it. I wish I had given in years ago. You do however to my knowledge still need a laptop to download your photos and then you sinc the phone and iPad to that to update all your music and photos etc. the convenience of carrying the iPad instead of a laptop all the time is wonderful. Since having the iPad I have given my GPS away. I love the GPS on the iPad. No one talks to me in that annoying voice, I just follow the little blue line from A to B. if I go off track I can easily get back on track. I find it's great but I understand people's hesitance to chance, I was the same.

Those pictures are fantastic.

Can I suggest that isn't normally the PC that is the problem, usually it is the operating system freezing (MS Windows). I use a PC and have no problems using Linux which is free and on which as I understand it, the Apple operating system is based on.

I have to toss something else in the mix. Samsung Galaxy2 tab due out in the next few weeks.
IPad and apple users will jump up and down saying how much better their apple stuff is. However, Apple can take over your pc.
Ipad is maybe a bit more user friendly and has a lot of good features. Considering Android has only been around a short time
it is fast gaining ground. Android is a lot more compatible with microsoft . Galaxcy has a USB connection thus allowing conection to printers & keyboards
cameras and such. If you want to load music on an apple you have to open your music library in I tunes and things get messy. with android it is just drag and drop.
Im not saying one is better than the other but do a bit of checking before you buy.
One other thing for Face book game players. Android is so much easier, in fact some you cant even play on Ipad.
Me I like my Laptop for video and photo editing. SWMBO wants a tablet so I guess we will be getting one soon.
Android is owned by Google, so is Youtube.

I have a Motorola Xoom Android tablet. I wouldn't knock the Ipad but Android is worth consideration in my opinion, however I know of someone with both the Xoom and Ipad who loves the Ipad. Horses for courses I guess, do your homework, but it is difficult to compare without using one of these items first.

There are new options coming on to the market all the time. There is a tablet that also comes with a keyboard and can be used as a tablet or similar to a laptop.

I also have a Motorola XOOM and I just love it. I rarely use the laptop now except for things like banking as I find it easier to type. Having just said that, I am currently using a little stylus which was gift and it is much faster than my fat fingers. I take my tablet to work every day to use in my lunch time. I can also access the web if I need to.
I just love gadgets.
