Does anyone know if it is legal for me to live in my camper in the front yard of my property in the Rockdale council in Sydney? I'm planning to leave my house to my daughter and for the boss and me to run away from home. We want to be able to live on the property out of the camper in between trips. Someone told me today that it's illegal because the property would effectively become a dual occupancy. It would depend on council codes.
not sure about where you live but here in Qld. where I live our neighbours lived in their van for months, no problems. had outdoor shower and everything. they were in the back yard though. council rules said you can live in your van provided it has wheels and the neighbours don't complain but you take the wheels off and that's a whole new ball game. all you can do is check with your council. sounds good though.
Don't worry what someone else may say just do it and stall if council comes sniffing round, and deny that you are camped there, just tell them you are cleaning the van, if they say anything, by the time council might take action you will have probably moved on anyway.
Isn't there lots of properties where they use a caravan as an extra room. You hear about it all the time. Caravan parked up plugged into the power. Son sleeps out there. I do see a lot in my travels, caravan parked on the front lawn, plugged into the power. Obviously someone is using the van. They are still there the next week when I go past again .
Some councils allow short term visiting rellies to park in the yard, but not permanent, full time. You have to loeave and come back after a period of time. It's all about council by-laws. Good luck with that one.

Quite honeslty I'm shocked and dismayed at an attitude like this. For all the talk about 'giving us nomads a fair go', to hear someone give advice to blatantly break a law is...
It's not hard to wonder why sometimes the township officials can run free campers off right away.

If your happy to obey every jot and tittle of the law so be it, I for one am not going to obey every law that some seat warmer can dream up for everyone to obey, so many go around these days in fear of not being politically correct and kow tow to every petty official that comes along and demands that they do this or that, be as grumpy a possible and refuse to bow down to petty officials. Cheers David
im with you roving dutchy i was once making a bbq out the back of my house in port mcq nsw ,it was made with besser block bricks and a great big hot plate, my neighbour proceeded to pop his head over one day and said you know your supposed to get council approval to build a bbq.
My reply they can go and get stuffed its not concreted together i can take it down in a day if i wish to.
bugger them ,half of them dont even know what they are talking about ,i had these huge gum trees out the back and they would drop there branches in my yard all the time and i mean huge ones it was council land out the back yard and backed onto a huge garden like walkway ,very pretty but damn dangerous for the size of the branches that used to drop off them trees.
i once rang them and asked can they come and take a look at the size of a branch hanging in the tree that has dropped but is being held by another branch ready to drop and hurt someone.
they came out and one guy said what that little branch pointing to a tiny skinny long branch. I proceeded to say NO that great big one up there, oh that one, but they were always so reluctant to cut branches back.
so when i visited my friend who lived next door to me he showed me his shed and pool had been wrecked by one of the gum trees. good onya council ,half the time its the greenies that step in and say oh no you cant do that. oh youve got me on a rant now ,sorry but they annoy me so much.
