Lawn Hill

We will be travelling through Queensland on our way to the national rally at Rockhampton in 2013 and are wondering what the roads to Lawn Hill are like. We have a semi offroad Jayco and would be going that way in early August next year.

G'Day Woodpecker,

Did this the same time last year with a full size van and terracan no problems.

Road can be a bit rough in places due to a lot of traffic flow and just check if any rain has fallen recently as there are a couple of small (shallow) water crossing but should not present any issues.

There were two drive vehicles and a variety of campervans and caravans that made the trip in and out OK.

Have a great trip and well worth the trip in.

Regards

Suggest you take the route via Burke & Wills Roadhouse - Gregory Downs - Lawn Hill. That will give you the least amount of unsealed road driving, and is usually the best route.
As with all unsealed roads, it will depend when the grader was last through. The main reason travellers have issues on such roads is that they drive too fast for the conditions, and are often too heavily laden. The Lawn Hill road has shallow "dips" where little creeks of the wet season have been scooped smooth by the grader. They often are not signposted in any way. You need to be going slowly enough to be able to take these without bottoming your suspension, or causing your tyres to balloon out, thereby widening the tread gaps and driving stones in same.
It is not unusual for Mt Isa people to have a weekend away at Adels Grove, travelling the above route in conventional cars. I have seen numbers of standard caravans in there. Ditto big Winnebagos and the like.
