I would like to thank you all for your comments much appreciated, I have been looking and am impressed with the new Mazda BT 50 XLR Auto 6speed, and just wondered how may members are driving automatics and if that is the best way to go?
My experience is that modern auto trans are streets ahead of those of old and more suitable to towing than previously.
It is pretty impossible, with a modern auto, to 'labour' the tug in too high a gear as one can do with a manual. Modern autos are usually very well 'computer controlled' and measure roadspeed, engine speed, load etc etc and simply change, and maintain, the gear best suited to the situation.
Cheers - John

Whyen I thinks of an auto I picture a vehicle with power steering, disc brakes, radio/CD/Ipod etc, air conditioners, radial tyres, bucket seats, cruise control etc................................... When I think of clutches I get a picture of an FJ Holden., and I really don't want to go back there. OJ

I have a manual car, and want an auto as I think a good one would be a smoother tow vehicle. I don,t think anyone can change gears as smoothly as an automatic. The newer computerized autos must be better as the programs running them are better. Next tug will be an auto Bill
There are a number of autos out there that have the option of semi manual selection where you can select a gear and lock it in you can also use it for engine braking especially when towing I regularly use this system rather than just running in automatic. I dont use 5th gear always tow in 4th.

I think autos are the go for towing, just knock it out of overdrive. It may rev a little higher but puts less stress on all the mechanicals. With regard the BT-50, I've just bought one and it's much better than my previous Navara in all capacities, waiting for the new van to really try it out
Hi, we drive a 100 series with a auto box. It's really the only way to go as it can change gear without loosing road speed no matter how steep the hill. It's not possible to do that with a manual box. Then again as with many things there will be people who disagree but that's alright.
