In developing this Directions Paper, we have sought to balance the needs of visitors with the needs of local business. We believe we have achieved this.
The Directions Paper does not seek the closure of council-provided camping services. Instead, it provides councils with a way forward for continuing to service the needs of its tourist community whilst supporting local businesses.
The Directions Paper also does not seek to force any visitor to Tasmania into using any specific accommodation or camping options. The State Government recognises that visitors to Tasmania seek a variety of accommodation options to choose from during their holiday and supports maintaining those options. Tasmania places significant value on all of our visitors and takes great pride in the many experiences that this State can offer.
Councils must be mindful of their competitive neutrality obligations under the National Competition Policy and apply full cost attribution to any council-provided camping services. If the council only provides a low level of service, the costs associated with providing that service are also likely to be low. The Directions Paper does not discourage low-cost camping.
I understand that to obtain the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Limited Recreational Vehicle Friendly Status requires options for low-cost camping, as opposed to simply free camping.
Thank you for your submission to the Directions Paper. Your interest has been appreciated.

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
As an ex Tasmainian I have to say that those comments are encouraging especially the one about the level of service provided and the cost of that service. Having not read the document as yet the accompanying comments appear to give councils the power to provide a level of service with a cost to suit which after all I and many others have been saying for a long time. There is now scope for caravan parks to take another look at this with the thought of providing a similar service for those of us on the road full time. This in the end will bring $'s into the park and more importantly into the local economy. I guess only time will tell how it all pans out. Food for thought. Brian
