storing potatoes

Hi everyone, I thought I would jump on and just ask what people do about storing there potatoes. We don't have a separate storage area in the bench top like in some of the vans we have owned, thanks for all the help we have received up to now, less than 24 hours before departure, looking foreward to meeting lots of nomads out there.

We keep ours in a shoe box (it's just the right size) and keep in the bottom of a cupboard.

We always keep ours in the fridge, whether at home or on the road. We don't carry very many with us when on the road though.

I never put potatoes in the fridge. At home they would be in the bottom of the pantry. Travelling, I like the idea of a shoebox in the cupboard. Same with sweet potato (Kumera)

I have a black cloth bag that I was given years ago which has "spuds" embroidered on it. The spuds go in there in one of the bottom cupboards.
Be aware that if you are crossing the state border into WA they'll take your potato box/bag unless its empty and clean of all dust etc.

You can buy specially designed heavy cotton bags for potatoes and onions. They have a drawstring top which makes the bag easy to fill, and a zip on the side of the bag which makes it very easy to remove the vegetables. While on the road, we carry ours on a shelf in one of our cupboards and they travel very well.

I keep ours in a small ice cream container, in the bottom of a cupboard - the darker the better - and the container can be washed out well for going across borders.

Why wouldn't you put them in the fridge? I think they last longer if you do! I put onions and carrots in the fridge too.

I don't store them in the fridge simply because I know they will still keep out of it and the fridge is usually full of other things. I checked on it though and potatoes stored in the fridge will turn their starch into sugar. They will not keep as well and when cooked will go dark. They need to be kept in a cool dark and dry place.

Bottom of a cupboard . Only buy a few at a time so they never look like going off .

Thanks everyone for your wisdom and advice, do like the shoe box idea, at home we just used to buy what we needed, so good to know we don't have to change to much in our ways, well if this rain ever lets up ( top of 12 degrees today cry) and the old boy can hitch up we are about 2 1/2 half hours away from leaving for warmer and dryer areas, I hope. Take care everyone.

I was always taught you don't put potatoes or onions in the fridge for the reasons mentioned above. They don't last as long and go off quicker. Carrots go in the fridge as do other veges.

Thats interesting, havent kept spuds in the fridge before, but onions seem to last better in the cupboard...

Have found both potatoes and onions seem to sweat and shoot if put in the fridge.
