Hi Tess
We are currently in Peterborough on our way to the Flinders Ranges after passing through the areas you nominate. Cobar caravan Park was a pleasant place to stay. Between Cobar and Bourke we stayed at Gundabooka NP at $10 per night for drop toilets and pit fireplace on large clearly defined site. Just off the highway on the way in is a picnic area with a short walk to some Aboriginal rock art which we found interesting. Kidmans Camp at Bourke was a good base for a few days while we did the attractions around Bourke. Further on we were quite satisfied with the free camp on the edge of Colarenebri which has full amenities including hot showers. Our journey began in Toowoomba and while we are enjoying all the new places we have visited the standout for us has been Menindi Lakes south of Broken Hill. Brilliant free camp location. You are welcome to view our blog and photos at the site below. Happy travelling. Regards, Ken

Thanks so much Ken. I'm as concerned about the safety aspect of these places I have heard differing views. I'm travelling alone and I'm not too well just now so trying to cut down the length of the days, Been fighting the flu. I think I'll have to do Broken Hill to Cobar in the day then, not too sure Bout Wilcannia. Enjoy your trip.
Tess

Heard on the news last night that the supermarket in Wilcannia has closed. The service station is selling bread/milk, but theres a lot of consternation about food supply, not a happy township at present.

We stayed at Cobar caravan park last year, its fine.

Maybe you could stay where you are for an extra day or 2 until you feel better Tess? Best wishes.

Don't spose you will still be there Monday would you? If you are perhaps we could catch up? I don't want to do the trip in one go just now. Normally I might but been off colour lately. Is there a van park in town your son could recommend? Tess

Evie , I know it is 'nearly' 500 k tween th Hill & Cobar , Emmdale is a 'neat' little stop 160k from Cobar .

If you can't make th 500k . I would not stop at Wilcannia . I stopped stopping there over 20yrs ago .

When you see as many bars on windows as there are there , makes one wonder .

Thanks all for the responses, I must admit (dare I say it) I am feeling much better than I was. Still barking but I imagine that will go on for a while yet. I heard that news about the store there. I felt sorry for the guy. If I had been feeling better I could have helped him in the store for a bit!! Just joshin...
Thanks again.

Hi there, unfortunately we will be leaving Saturday, there is a van park in town, not sure what it's like. Weather here isn't too bad, wind is a bit on the cool  side. Tess take the advise not to stop in Wilcannia have only heard bad reports there. Hope your feeling better soon there's lots of flu going round.

Ditto to ValnRob - do not stay in Wilcannia. By the way, cheaper petrol in Wilcannia is in a strret behind the one near the bridge. Kidmans Camp is also our choice for safety at Bourke. There is a rest area south of Wilcannia which would be safe if others are staying. Has a toilet and childrens playground - is it Three trees? Don't have my book with me.

THanks for the warnings. I think I have decided not to stop in Wilcannia and maybe not go on up to Bourke this trip. Might go across to Gilgandera and up to Moree, more towns that way if I need to stop and rest up. I might get some free camping in too hopefully. I have been stuck in parks all week. Not really met anyone much. The heater was nice when I was really sick I must say.
Again, ever helpful.
Thanks
Tess

I am following your trip Tess and hoping that cold and cough is going now. pity you haven't come up north further, the temps are so much warmer..
You will find plenty of free camping up the Newell if you go Gilgandra - Moree area. All the best.
