heading for nsw : help needed

Greetings fellow Grey Nomads

I am in need of of a bit of advice

we have been on the road for 18 months and are heading to nsw in sept until december.

We are looking at staying at dumaresq, copeton dams and also gumma reserve initially

1)  we prefer free or cheap camping (as opposed to caravan parks) near water for the fishing (salt or fresh) and would like to know if there are any other places worth going to.

2) I have a porta bote and love crabbing including redclaw. what are the best places to go for these and what do you catch redclaw in ? ( I understand that you cannot use opera house pots or cast nets in NSW )

As this is our last few months on the road before becoming homebound for a while would appreciate any feedback or ideas about camping in NSW

Regards

Peter and Rose

Hi Peter & Rose. We have stayed at Dumeresq Dam a few times & love it there. Very quiet (no power boats allowed) & not far out of Armidale for shopping. Fishing - trout & red fin. Free as well. Only problem (judging by your avatar) is they do not allow dogs there. Cheers

Hi Peter and Rose,

How far south do you intend going, any particular destination?

Do you mean the Dumaresq River or the Dam?
The Dumaresq River on the NSW/QLD border is fantastic.
Just out of Goondiwindi are a number of free campsites right on the river, we stayed at Lees Reserve in July - Peter caught a Murray Cod!
See the photos below

This brochure has lots of places to camp at along the border.

There is also Pindari Dam - haven't been there but it does look nice.

There are also free campsires (you can stay 7 days) at Bingara along the Gwydir River

Hi janette

We will be taking it as it comes with no particular plan in place. We have a fair bit of time and would like to see places we have not yet visited

Regards

There is Broke near the Hunter Valley, a free camp for 72 hrs, non drinking water, toilets and garbage bins, nowhere to fish at the grounds.

The river near bingara is lovely spot but was very busy when we were there last. I would reccomend Chaffey dam between Tamworth and Nundle. Both are good places to visit. We are
planning
to go to Chaffey this weekend, and you can take dogs. Also toilets and hot showers. Hope its great wherever you go.

If you are going to Dumaresq near Armidale, head out along the waterfall way to a free camp at Wollomombi Falls  then you have the Styx river NP with river camping which is a little further on . Depends on what you are travelling in but from there you can continue down the Armidale/Kempsey Rd ( dirt rd) towards the coast, at the foot of the range you have Georges Junction, its a free camp on the banks of the Macleay river where Georges creek meets the river , lots of room with great views back up the ranges.

Further down the same road you have Blackbird flat, another free camp on the same river. this road will take you on into Kempsey,( our area ) them up the hwy to Gumma reserve at Macksville.

Hi Peter and Rose,

We live in Inverell and go to Copeton Dam all the time.  Very popular with the locals in holiday seasons, almost cannot move out there and it is fairly vast.

Lots to do and apparently good fishing in the dam.  I don't like freshwater fish so I do fish there at all but we always have amazing fun out there and since they have made all the improvements it is great for campers etc and day trippers of course.  The amenities are wonderful now and clean, lots of wildlife around to take pics of, lots of walking trails etc.

Cannot remember what the camping fees are but I think you could find out online or I can ring for you tomorrow and ask and let you know here or pm you.  Just let me know

Michelle

Thanks everybody Gives us a bit to think about.
We stayed at copeton dam a couple of times last year and really enjoyed it so will go again
A lovely couple run the place and the cost was $6 a night unpowered. For the fisho's there are lts of redfin which has a beautiful sweet flesh.
We will try a few of the ideas yu have given us and let you know how we fared
Many thanks Peter and Rose
