SO OK when you are free camping do you have to lock up table and chairs and other stuff at night?????

Yes you do lock things up the people around you maybe ok it,s the ones that drop in while your asleep you have to look out for so you don't leave temptation out.

Depends where you "camp". I guess you would need to decide how 'vulnerable' the area is - praps.

I have been 'tent' camping, 'camper-trailer' camping and now 'caravan' camping for around 45 years. I have yet to 'lock up' table and chairs etc of a night. I bush walk away from my camp most days and whilst I lock the van door and windows, I leave my stuff around including pots, billies, pans etc at the fireplace.

I am either lucky or camp in the right places, but I have never had anything stolen from a campsite.

Last year we were parked up opposite coopernook Hotel (NSW) & left our chairs out (not new fancy ones but about 15yrs old) over night & they were gone next morning.

We almost lost a small BBQ from under our annex at StLawrence free camp. Our little dog Misty sleeps on my pillow so she can see out, the two guys took off like scalded cats when she started barking at 2 o'clock in the morning when it was dead quiet and pitch black. (We installed a motion detector on the side of the van and that helped with security after that) That was the only time, I could not help myself, training took over and I stayed in the dark shadows on the side of the road by the park for maybe 30 minutes. Sure enough the boys had to pass to get to town where I assume they lived. I waited until they were about 4ft from me then flicked my very bright LED torch in their eyes and asked what the F***they were doing. I haven laughed so much in years watching these two go off through the scrub towards the railway line. I reported the incident to the local jonny the next day, gave him a description and he knew exactly who they were. The bright blue silk boxers gave them away he! He!

I never worry about it I look at it if they can get past my dog they can have it, one of the benifits of travelling with a good guard dog never had any trouble, anywhere we have camped and always feel safe. biggrin

We usually put stuff away, mostly because of the wildlife... possums can make a mess of anything they think might have had food in it. Also we carefully put our garbage either in a bin with a lid, or into the tug (suitably wrapped).
The human sort of wildlife hasnt visited our camps during the night.

The alarm system I pm you was one I told a bloke in darwin to put on he's new dirt bike he laught and said no one will steal it that night a couple said thats ours gone even with

the dog barking gone in a blink. that was at Keo caravan park plus six push bikes.

Only ever had one thing taken whilst camping, and that was a very early editionof Camps book - possibly no. 1 or 2 - left sitting on chair and went to the loo - gone when came back.
Oh, yes and a french stick of bread - taken by ducks in a caravan park. biggrin biggrin biggrin

If you have portable solar panels I imagine you would want to chain and padlock them to the van.

Thanks for the reminder Marj. Note to self, get lock for solar panel. I think we discussed that at Cobb & Co and I forgot all about it until now.

I leave stuff out most of the time at campsites. The only time I've had anything nicked was in a caravan park - and that was just a small table purchased from Aldi - they left my rather more expensive chair fortunately. They must have been really desperate for a small table.

Yep - had to walk back into town for another one, told the girls in the bakers what happened, they laughed so much, gave me a replacement!!!! And I couldn't eat Peking duck - haven't you seen my avatar? That is on my bike!!

Jules, that's terrible, I could forgive the camps book but the french stick of bread, that's just down right rude and unforgivable. If it was me I would have had Peking duck for dinner that night. Just don't tell Bohemian Gypsy please.

solarpanel alarm locks on ebay are a good solution Thay are about $60 but cheapar than solar panles etc

The bottom line is dont hand out invertations; disbelief .

We did have a couple of bloody backpackers tried to plug into our jenny in broud daylight, they were to dumb to work out that it wasn;t even running, then wanted the Mrs to start it for them, talk about hide.
