Recovery of 5th Wheeler when tug breaks down

Have any 5th Wheeler owners had there tug breakdown and require towing/recovery? If so how has the towing company recovered both the tug and the 5th Wheeler?

When I was still in the work place & operating tilt tray for the business I put this exact question to the now X-boss what will happen in this situation & how do we recover the 5th wheeler. He went into the horrors because he had not thought about it, eventually saying that he would end up having to have a 5th wheel hitch point incorperated into the tilt tray. This still had not been done when I left & to my knowledge we had never had been asked to do a recovery, but it will happen.

I will add that most of our work revolved around road crashes & stolen vehicles as we had the police contracts for this work. NRMA depo also operated a tilt tray service in the area & not sure of their setup. A 5th wheel cannot be loaded onto a tray the same way as a conventional caravan if it was unable to be towed.

Even if the 5th wheel is towable you would need a very large tilt tray to carry the tug & tow the 5th at the same time, I think it would be a matter of two trips.

This is an excellent Question cjt55 and welcome to the site.. My Hubbie and i are thinking of buying one of the large 5th wheelers and selling our home, as we just love the lifestyle.. Now you ask how to recoverthe van, we have not thought or even talked about this as it could well happen with a click of a finger, and i have been thinking how would it happen, as we had enough problems getting our 26 foot Jayco pulled up on the back of a tow-truck when we lost our back wheel, as it would not fit on the first truck they sent from broome and when they sent there largest truck, it hung right of the end a long way, i will be watching this post with interest as if we are going to buy one we need to know all the good things pluss the draw-backs.  Have a wonderful Friday and weekend.. Ellice..

Haven't really considered the situation as yet, and it may not help everyone, but ours is a Southern Cross (JR-EasyTraveller) 5th wheeler, and I would probably call them (they're like family now!) to see if anyone is in the area. The owners' group is very supportive - we'd certainly help out anyone else with a similar hitch and I'm sure the others would, too. Insurance issues would have to be covered, of course.

Having said which, surely the companies providing this sort of service must be thinking about the issues by now...?!?
