I replaced all my lights with LEDs from China two years ago and have no worries.

Yes I've bought some 5 metre strips cut them and soldered fittings to them and just plug into the cig lighter on the house battery. Light up well and use little power and cost so little.

Hi please forgive my ignorance but what are LED's, we have just bought our van in March and are now looking at what we require for free camping I have heard people talk about LED but don't understand could someone please explain

In techie talk LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode.

For the rest of us mere mortals it is a relatively new form of lighting that relative to its light output is significantly more efficient (ie uses less current/watts) then either fluorescents or incandescents (such as halogens or good ol'fashion light globes). They are also very reliable, lasting much longer than the older types.

This is a big advantage for those of us who regularly rely on battery power for our electrical requirements.

wheelchair nana, if you look at any of the torches etc in Bunnings or else where, look at the front and if it has lots of tiny little bulbs instead of one you know its an LED.
I have a headlight, the one you wear on your head but its the old one bulb type, the batteries only last half an evening where others have the LED type and go forever. I also have those little torches that hang from a hook that are LED, about $6.00, can get them anywhere. Its still going strong.
As the others have said you can buy strips of them from China, my son in law did that and attached them to his campertrailer.
Someone else put a strip above the kitchen sink in their caravan, they seem to be a lot brighter than ordinary lights.

Deal Extreme is also a good site to source LED's

You have to look carefully, at the lights that you want to replace and do careful measurements, as there are many different shapes and sizes and connections, but you can save a lot of money by dealing direct, as if you buy locally you will pay at least 10 times more and they are getting their supplies from the same source as you will

I fitted 2 5metre rolls to my van which is 600 led's in all, if they were all switched on at one time the amperage draw would be 4 amps, but I have divided them into approx 1 metre lenths and only switch on what is required at the time, have also fitted short lengths in the wardrobe and in the front boot

I used warm white in the living area and cool white in the kitchen.

I've also bought mine from the same Ebay shop and Deal Extreme find them both good. I do note that I bought 240v globes for home and they don't last very long. I hope the 12v last longer.

Hi All,
Nice bit of gear LEDs, Just recived 5 packets from the same place. Going to do all the outside light as well as the inside ,plus all the tail and side lights.
All up around $40 landed. I do have a roll of blue leds, didnt look before I brought.!!
And with LEDs you dont get that inverter winny noise on the wireless at night on AM..

Thanks guys, I can't believe my good fortune in checking out this forum everyday. I needed to replace 3 halogen lights in our new van, went to the local lighting shop and ordered 3 LED lamps, was horrified at the price, ($114 for the 3) but went and ordered 'cause I didn't know any better. Picked them up after 2 weeks tried to fit them in but they were too long to fit in the roof cavity, took them back and got my money back. Spent the whole of yesterday online to try to find ones that would fit, all the australian ones were really expensive, but I did notice chinese ones were cheap, didn't know what to do, so did nothing till this morning, checked the forum as per usual and what do you know? this link to the chinese website and really, really cheap LED's, so got my 3 lights for $9.93!! what a saving. Sorry to rant on a bit, but am absolutely flabbergasted at the price difference, and thanks again to all the wonderful helpful people on this forum.
