Storage

Hi all,

You will be hearing from me a lot in the next 2 weeks.

At present we are renovating our home in Brighton Qld to rent as its time to hit the road, enjoy life and kick up the heels.

We have a shed in the backyard which is where we are going to store our belongings while the house is rented. I have bought a huge roll of white plastic  bubble wrap, suction bags and silver fish and hippo to use in the shed. All our gear will be on pallets.Electrical items will be sold and our beloved motor bikes will be sold. Whoops I am getting side tracked.

Any good advise for storing?

The throw out has started, only have weekends to do this so will have to be extra ruthless.

Welcome gollymolly.
Only suggestion I can make is to make sure everything is stored well above or high off the ground. Suctions bags are a great idea as nothing can get into those. Perhaps make sure that legs on tables which maybe on the ground have something wrapped around and under them or they could rot while you are away. Maybe some electrical items can be stored ratehr than getting rid of them all.

Hi GollyMolly, I have recently done the same thing. I found the vac bags and plastic boxes really good. As long as the box is stored out of the sun, or they start to get brittle and crack. The bags i used for lots of things. I use the suction bags and then store them. I have a QS doona, 2 regular bags of clothes (holding much of my wardrobe) and a small bag with papers in it. All of these plus a couple of small sentimentals I have been able to put into an average sized suitcase to store in the shed. Just to give you an idea. Now I'll stop raving... Hope this helps.

Regards,

Colls

don't forget the mouse baits, also make sure your shed is ventilated, i would also spray the whole place, furniture and all before i left for spiders.

Hi - boy do I hate packing a house to move - lucky don't ever have to do that again!!!!

Another thing - get some of those containers that take the moisture out of a room - - damp rid - available quite cheaply from the cheepie shops - might keep some stuff dry and free of mould.

We did exactly what you are describing for the two years that we were on the road, our furniture and goods were not precious antiques or even greatly valuably but they were our "things" that would not have produced a great deal of money if we had sold everything and would have cost a lot to relace when we eventually stopped travelling so it was the right way to go for us and in the end worked very well, doing exactly as described.  We left a few extra special items with willing friends.  One thing that was damaged was a large piece of pure wool blanketing in my craft box.  Little bugs had lunch and left holes but a clever bit of applique and wool embroidery covered that little mishap......pack everything away and go and don't look back!  it was the best two years of our lives, don't set a time limit, you will just know when it is time to go back and get your things out of storage and live what some call a normal life!  good luck from capricorn and pisces

Forgot to mention.......instead of throwing out, think about having a garage sale, it always amazes me what sells at garage sales and its a little bit of extra pocket money as well!

Good idea. The experts say to have 3 piles..stuff to sell, stuff to give away, and stuff to toss.

Is someone able to go into your shed say, every six months, and set off some bombs to get rid of any creatures.

And be sure you have good security on your shed.
