Could someone tell me what the Monaro HWY between Cann River, Vic and Canberra is like for towing please?
Also and as well even, the Kings HWY between Batemans Bay and Canberra?
All comments and words of wisdom will be welcome and greatly appreciated.
Gday...
It is an excellent drive Doug - excellent, sealed two-laned road. There are some hills obviously, but nothing very bad. The drive immediately north of Cann is a beautiful drive - just love those East Gippy forests.
Across the top to Cooma is some of the most "Australian" countryside I have seen in OZ. I love the drive. You will enjoy it.
Unfortunately, I haven't been Batemans Bay/Canberra. Sorry.
Cheers - John

Doug, it is OK from Cann River to Bega and then up Brown Mtn to Cooma and onto Canberra. Hubby says Cann River through the mountains should be OK now snow is almost finished but it is winding and hilly. Or you could cut across through Candelo to Bemboka with no problems. We just did Kings Highway from Batemans Bay to Braidwood on Wednesday - all OK. We pull a 1982 Viscount with a Nissan XTrail and have no problem. It has some 25kph bends but just use low gears and you're OK - both going up and going down. There is a good free camp beside the Shoalhaven River at Warri Reserve - Canberra side of Braidwood. While you are at Batemans Bay pm us and we'll see if we are back from Qld - we could meet over a coffee. We aren't far from BB. Check out the free camp at North Head Moruya while in the area (near Moruya airport) - for another time when you are not booked into a CP. Have a great trip.
I would have warned you that both highways include a steep and winding section uphill from the coast toward Canberra, but it will be no trouble to you with your little A-van behind your Prado. Enjoy, Doug! Give us a pm when you know where and when you'll be up here.... or down there!

Edit...Just thought I would ask for any good "Alternative" (Free) camps along both ways? Don't ask much do I.

Hi Doug, the road is in excellent condition; a little narrow but no major concern. Heading North from Cann River there are numerous spots you could pull over and free camp directly off the road, but depending on what day there are log trucks that start work early. I would stick to the highway stops where you find them as the bush tracks are narrow.
Wild life is a consideration and I have always found that avg speed around the 80kph mark is good for safety and enjoying the scenary. Depending on time of day expect to see wombats and kangaroo's, especially around creek area's and strangely a lot more activity through the pine plantations near the NSW border.
Another form of life anywhere between Cann and Canberra can be found driving marked and unmarked police cars/bikes.
Safe travels in a beautiful part of our great country,
Thanks to all for help so far, I will probably go Monaro Hwy to Kings Hwy then over to Batemans Bay. It sounds like a nice drive with plenty of magic images to be snaped up.
