Belmont Pines, on the shore of Lake Macquarie is another good one that does take dogs, I have stayed there and very good, especially in section on the hill.

Can anyone recommend a nice caravan park in the Newcastle area, I am an old newcastle boy but unfortunately I left the area in 1969 and joined the Navy, doesn't have to be to close to Newcastle. We are currently in Lightning Ridge and intend on free camping through Merriwa and Cessnock but the wife said if it doesn't warm up we might turn north. Thanks everyone, take care and enjoy.
Stockton Beach has a lovely Caravan Park on the water, I haven't stayed there but it looks nice from the outside. I don't believe they take dogs though and I think from memory you might travel with your dog. No connection with the park just thought it looked nice.
It depends how close you want you be to Newcastle as there is the choice of a number of van parks on the coast from Swansea heading North to Newcastle the furtherest no more than a 30 minute drive away from Newcastle.
The Pines and Blacksmiths are good parks for the southern Newcastle area (Swansea/Belmont), but my first choice is Stockton Beach, with the Ferry across the Hunter to the downtown area and station. Ozjohn.
PS> Good cheap chinese tucker next door at the bowls club.

Port Stephens has Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay and Halifax caravan parks that are dog friendly, out of school holidays. 50 minutes north of Newcastle as you would know being an x novacastrian. We also have a dog beach at Bagnals and another at Anna Bay. One Mile Beach caravan park could be dog friendly as well.
If you're thinking of having a day in Sydney while in Newcastle, the train to Sydney from Newcastle is only $2.50 all day for seniors and pensioners. I think interstate seniors cards are valid. This will cover your ferry from Stockton, train to Sydney and public transport (including ferries) in Sydney all day. It's an easy walk from the Stockton Ferry to Newcastle station.
If you decide to stay at Port Stephens as suggested by Helen and wish to have a day in Sydney, or just visit Newcastle, you can leave your car at Stockton rather than drive all the way round into town.
Thanks everyone for the imput we've decided to stay at Bellhaven caravan park in Raymond Terrace, its only a couple of klm's from where I grew up and not that far from Newcastle, take care and as always safe travels.
