I think John is actually at Forbes Rest Area - CAW Camps 6 953. This is across the road from the Forbes Lions Park CAW6 952 - which has toilets (and a dump point according to CAW Updates).
As you say HW, the Lions Park is only a day stop - no overnight camping. It shows on Google there is a sign stating "Short term parking only".
Interestingly, CAW 6 says camp 953 (Forbes Rest Area) has a 24 hour limit.
It does look like a nice place on Google Satelitte and Street View.

Had an easy trip from Terramungamine via Dubbo and Parkes all up around 150kms, plenty of time to have breakfast in Maccas at Parkes. The free camp here is good Forbes Lions Park Camps6 #953 but there are no toilets unless you walk to the Day Camp area next door. I have set up my shower en suite and put the porta potty in it, intend to have a hot shower tomorrow and catch up with the washing. This afternoon I walked round the lake, there are many bridges so the walk can be tailored to suite. Will walk up to Forbes tomorrow and have a look round and catch up with a bit of shopping, not much to carry back to the van. John
No problems John (did I hear an echo ) ... do you usually go to the Camps Website and update camps? ie - letting them know it has changed from 24hours to 48 hours.

No John I don't contact Camps whenever I find an anomoly. Infact I hadn't even noticed it. The name of the area is different but the pic was taken at the entrance.
I have been using Wikicamps app fir the iPad, and it gives me 2 areas in Forbes which are side by side almo st, both with 48 hour limits. We stopped there last week for a look, seems great!
Thats all good and my book says 48 hours but we had a gentleman from the mens shed come around for a chat and sell some goods and he said the 48 hours is just to cover them legally If you be have no worries how long you stay
Nice bloke and long term resident .. he is a regular visitor there and comes out with his little trinkets eh !
Down the western end there , I frequently camp 4-5 days .. they do say its primarily for self-contained vehicles, but its only a short walk to the toilets if you need to .. and the local walkers keep an eye open on the area so say 'hi' to them when you can .. they are the local influence on the council and do a good job too ..

Another great get together happened by chance. Have had a lot of Happy Hours with the same people at Greens and Gympie that lasted well past 10 pm.

Forbes is a lovely place and so rich in bush ranger history. Did you know that Ned Kelly's sister Kate is buried in the Forbes cemetery? (married name Foster) She's only a stones throw from the grave of Ben Hall another famous bush ranger. If you go to the hotel in the middle of the main street (I've forgotten the name of both) the owners will let you into the mini museum underneath the pub. Entry is via a door in the side on the hotel and you get to take your time wandering around the displays and leaving by way of a staircase back to the main servery area within the hotel.
I found Forbes a friendly place to visit and am keen to get back up that way again. Aime.

Thanks for the welcome people. I've been lurking around here for awhile, but being the quiet, bashful person I am, I haven't produced a post until today. Great site though and I enjoy reading through all the posts.
I've had the Kombi since mid 2009. It was a fairly rust free unit when I got it, but it was full of dings, tired old paint and the fuel lines were rotten, a disaster waiting to happen and one of the principle causes of air cooled VW fires. Once those engines really get going, not even the fire brigade can put out that burning metal. A female friend and myself pulled it down, straightened it up and painted it, replacing all the windows with sliders, new seals all round, new headlining (by a Ballarat company) and my eldest son helped me make a cupboard for the back. It has a full width rock & roll bed, a porta-potty, a "sail-rail" annex and all I need to jump in and hit the road any time I feel like getting away.
I'm in my late 50's and with a history of working in the field of auto buying and selling until I decided to change tack and became a nurse 12 years ago. I learnt to spray and panel beat when I was in partnership with a chap who has since passed away. I also learnt a lot about what makes a vehicle run and how to keep it doing exactly that.
Don't ask me why I chose a Kombi. I originally bought it to take my dog camping with me, but discovered an Australian wide Kombi club and have been to many great meets with them. In fact I've just come back from Revolks in Geelong this Sunday just gone. We stayed two nights at Lorne and then back to the "Steam Packet Gardens" on the Geelong waterfront to put our vehicles on display.
Me? A nurse currently working in geriatric psych which I find fascinating. I have a few acres well out of town (S/W of Ballarat) where I grow organic veggies on my 5 acre property. I love older cars, especially English and early European vehicles. My other hobbies are reading and I write short stories when I get the urge.
Not sure where my next trip will take me. I'm currently a bit snowed under with work, but hopefully I'll meet some of you on the road real soon. Happy travels to you all, Aime.

I am positive that we stayed at the free camp at Forbes. I think they moved the toilet block up closer to the highway. Rest area only, but free camping in the land behind the toilet block ( I repeat I think). At least 10 vans there when we camped back in 2011.
