This morning Doug came over with his book on eucalypts - we determined that the trees here (Broke NSW) are Eucalyptus perniculata. He just wanted to get that worked out before he left: He was preceded by Jonathan and Colleen, with whom we had Happy Hour the evening before, all single grey nomads. Doug is in his early 90's, spry and hearty.
This evening Jonathan returned and as I had a bottle of sangiovese purchased the day before, specifically to go with spaghetti, I invited him to join me. When all was prepared, we sat at a picnic table with music provided from a playlist on a USB stick plugged into an FM transmitter and piped through transistor radios. The evening was mild, all was great! Jon has also lost a beloved wife and has taken to the road. We toasted the lovely ladies, relived fond memories and shared a few wonderful moments.
We both are dealing as best we can with the hand we've been dealt, and agree that despite all, life is great and it doesn't really get much better than this: Happy memories, a great meal, good company and the chance to travel as we wish. So much to see, so many interesting people with great stories - this Grey Nomad scene has got to be the best therapy out there!
I reckon I've sat at that same table more than once. Great that you guys have met and are enjoying each other's company. Sad that you have both lost your wives. Can't do much about that but getting out there and enjoying yourselves sounds like good medicine.
Lovely post Anton - I would liked to have joined you. Not easy for you guys after such long marriages. Safe travels and hopefully we will catch up again now I am on the move heading south.

That is a lovely post Anton. Glad you and Jonathon met up and were able to share precious memories and look forward to the future whatever that may hold. It is nice to know that men have those conversations also. Thank you again for sharing such a special evening and conversation.
Sharon.

May all of your days be diamonds, but when the odd stone turns up instead get on line or find a friend and talk it through, that is the best thing about being on the road, there are friends not far away on line or in reality.
