Grey Nomads on ABC Radio again this morning

Gday...

Grey Nomads are certainly the talk of the town in Cairns at the moment.

There was an interview with "someone" (I did not catch his name) who is lobbying for (or is part of an organisation lobbying for) a "ferry" to take Grey Nomads from Weipa to Darwin.

Apparently, Cape York is "the last true adventure" but many GNs, according to this bloke, don't go up Cape York because you have to drive on 800-oddKm of rough dirt roads, see the sights, experience the experience and then head back south down the same track. Therefore, from his 'research' many GNs don't bother.

It is his proposition that, to make the whole adventure much more enjoyable, a 'ferry' should be put in place to take GNs, their 4X4 and van/camper/motorhome between Darwin and Weipa. There would be two choices - join the 'ferry' at Darwin, cross the Gulf to Weipa, drive down south to Cairns and off ya go; or if you prefer to do that in reverse - drive from Cairns to the tip, over to Weipa, join the 'ferry' and sail to Darwin and continue your journey further west.

So, just to humour me, please indicate your preferences in the attached poll.

Cheers - John

Who would set that up and who would pay for it? Sounds a hairbrained scheme to me.

I wonder why Darwin - just drop them at Karumba. Maybe there are GNS out there who want everything to be easy. Losing the 'spirit' maybe.

Like the thought of Spida's idea but isn't there already some form of a boat/ship that takes people and rigs from Cairns to Bamaga or vice versa? We haven't, unfortunately, made the trek up to the Cape yet but it is certainly on the agenda!

I was in Mareeba this winter and just about every second person had been up to the gulf , Mareeba seem to be the starting point and finish point for such trips , A ferry what would be the point to it it the experence that people go for it not the destaination it's the trip

Gday...

They interviewed the 'bloke' again later in the day. He is from the Weipa Muncipal Council and wants to quadrupule the number of visitors through Weipa. One of the organisations he is trying to engage is the mob that run the Cairns-Barmaga ferry.

The reason for Weipa/Darwin is to link Cape York with Kakadu - his 'research' shows there are "an incredible number' of GNs who would love to not have to drive back down some 2,000km from Weipa and round the Gulf to Kakadu etc.

Judging by the vote on here - most agree with me - either No (or don't care)

Cheers - John
