Longreach

In August 2012 we stayed at the free camp just outside Longreach. Its about 3-4ks north of the town on the Winton Road. Known as Longreach Waterhole Camps 6 number 355.

Max. 4 days stay, Clean toilets ,picnic area , boat ramp and the council truck comes in every morning to clean the toilets and empty the garbage bins. Excellent flat, clean sites. About 30-40 vans there each night we were there and safe to leave your van while doing the tours of Longreach. All for nothing, just spend your money in town.

We recommend it highly. Thanks Longreach for looking after us travellers. Water can be obtained from the showground in town and a dump site there too.

Thanks for the great recommendation (I also read your intro post and it sounds like you have been having a wonderful time).

So Welcome to the forum!

We are relatively newbies also and are heading off on a year long trip in 6 weeks so people recommendations are invaluable!

Hope to see you out there.
Cheers
Chris and Peter

Yep - the Longreach Waterhole is a great spot - we were there when they had the fishing competition, and a good tme was had by all!!!!

In Longreach - the one thing we found really good value for money was the Paddlesteamer Sunset Tour, they pick you up where you are camped - yes even the Waterhole - take you out on the paddlesteamer to watch sunset, with nibblies and drinks (takeyour own) - then back to the drovers camp - delightful stew and fresh bread, lovely deserts, bush poetry, music, entertainment - with damper and billy tea to finish - and to top it all off - they drop you back to your camp!!!!!!! Great stuff!

Thank you Chris and Peter for your warm welcome.

Jules we didnt do the cruise only because we ran out of time. We heard from several campers that it was very good. Longreach has so much to offer and we will be going back there again one day. We spent 2 days at the Stockman Hall of Fame and 2 mornings at Qantas. When I say days I mean several hours each day. So much to take in.

We were there in early July this year for about a week . One night there was 112 rigs there  .

Caught a few ( not many ) yellow belly and black bream 2kms or so along the river .

Good place to camp , and plenty to see around Longreach .

You were lucky to have so few there. Not a good place to be when it starts to rain - best to pack and leave. Otherwise good spot.
