Moving on...the next step

My house has been sold. The deposit has been put down so as of 28 Feb I will be a poor homeless old age pensioner. YIPPEE!! Now to become a real grey nomad instead of just wanting to be one. lol.

Just got to work out now what I am going to keep and where I will store it and what to do with the rest of it...sell it or just give it away. Haven't quite decided yet. But a decision has to be made within the next 6 weeks or I am up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

Any suggestions on what to keep would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Do three piles - one keep for sure, one maybe, and one definitely not!!!!! Garage Sales - once the word gets out people will come to see what you are selling.

Clothes - 1 pair jeans - 3 pairs shorts - t-shirts - jumper -coat - hat - sun hat - bathers - thongs, sneakers, walk shoes or boots - sox - nickers - bras -

After your first trip, you will get rid of a heap of stuff -

Don't stress it - it will all come good when you hit the road.

Congratulations on taking the first step and selling the house Chris.

It doesn't matter what I take away even though way too much is never the right mix for the weather, conditions, my waistline, etc. Vinnies comes in handy at times.

hey Chris, I decided to rent my villa and am out of here at the end of Jan early Feb, I've found storage to be  very expensive so I'm keeping  little. I advertised my larger pieces of furniture and other items I don't want to store on gumtree and have sold off several things I can replace at a later date, I am storing a few esentials like my bed, fridge etc. ....just incase life does not go well out there.......kinda like a back-up plan.

Its a big move to make, and I'm quite excited and so looking forward to my travels, I'm also a little scared.......normal I think when making such a huge change in life style. I have no doubt you must feel much the same way. I hope all goes smoothly for you, the preperation is not easy and seems endless but in a month or so I'm sure we will both find it all worth while.

Good luck, cheers Kim

Hi Bowler bear
Congrats!
Storage is a bit expensive, I got myself a lge plastic crate with a secure lid and all the stuff that I definately want to keep is in that! At present it lives with some friends in Gippsland. Every so often I go to visit my 'stuff' and change a few things around.

All will fall into place!

Long as when you are up that creek bb it's not in a barbed wire canoe, enjoy the playground when you get out in it and good luck with all that sorting.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. Considering I am away for 1 and a half weeks out of the next six I'll have to get moving with everything. Hope to meet you all somewhere in the great outdoors.

I am finding the thought of getting rid of absolutely everything to be more than a daunting job. I feel I should hang onto basic stuff, fridge, freezer, couple of cupboards I like and the tv unit. Plus a bed. I know I could buy again if I needed to but there are some things I just am not ready to let go.

Bowlerbear,

I was lucky when I did what your doing, a friend allowed me to put a container on their property, so I was able to keep the basics, as you say, it nice to be able to keep some things, circumstances change down the road, as they allways do, 4 years down the track, I was lucky enough to get a block of land and I had the basics to have a home away from home still, ( the camper is still home).

Kevin.

We took some friends away with us in September, then they went away in November - now they have come home, are selling up and buying a bigger van to become Grey Nomads - the bug has bitten!!! It's hard to get it ut of your system once it bites. (As for us, we still like the comfort and security of owning our home.)

Have just realized I have extremely limited time to get everything sorted, cleared, sold, given away or whatever. It is five weeks till the date I have set for a garage sale and I am away 11 days during that time. As Steve Irwin would say "Crikey".

I'm down to a two week count down and finding it so difficult to get myself organised, what to take....keep ...sell.....chuck.....

Its been very helpful reading BB's replies, you all sound so casual/ relaxed. I hope I feel the same way when the time comes as I'm feeling very nervous today and wondering whether my decision to become a nomad is the right one for me.....though I have now passed the point of no return.

I think keeping a few personal possessions Chris is a good idea even though most items are easily replaced, you never know........

Good luck with the packing and sorting, once you get started I'm sure its not as big as it feels its going to be....

Once we are out on the road I'm sure all will just fall into place....Cheers Kim

I don't know about sounding casual or relaxed. I think I'm like a duck at the moment, calm on top but paddling like crazy underneath. I'll be coming back from the Illawarra Folk Festival next Monday. Can you pm me your phone number and I'll call in and exchange anxieties. lol I'll visit my sister also.

You girls think you have problems, lol. We're both in our second marriage which results in two lots of stuff accumulated over better than 35 years each spread over two houses three hours apart. I think I'm on around the 7th or 8th uteload of stuff to the tip (at least another few to go) plus Sandra has produced quite a few garbage bags of clothing that we've donated to the Salvoes. Still a lot more to go. Add to that, both places have been renovated since our marriage. As time goes on, chucking things seems to be getting easier but hell, it's going to be a big garage sale of the things too good to chuck. To add to the fun, both Sandra's previous hubby & I were contractors (1 x plumber, 1 x sparky/handyman) so lots of tools, etc, too. No fixed timeline but hope to be out of here in around three weeks lol.

Darrell & Sandra

What doesn't fit into the van goes. If you have children, hand over the stuff you want to stay in the family. I'm not saying you'll never want to be in a house again, but I am saying that things will change. I'd just about guarantee your needs will change, your lifestyle will change, and you may not want to reclaim your wordly chattels. In 1, 2 or 3 years time your fridge requirements may have changed, and you may want to update to a later model. The place you get may not accommodate your current fridge, or the bed, or anything else you feel attached to now. Then you'll have to make all these decisions again.
When you park up you may sell your rig, giving you some means by which you can refurnish your smaller residence.
It's a huge step, but scaling down is a really good feeling and a great way to unclutter your life.

My thoughts are that if you can't use it in the motorhome or caravan, it has no value, no matter what you paid for it!!!

Declutter your possessions, and you declutter your life!!!smilesmilesmile

Probably a good idea to sell the fridge and freezer and buy new after you stop travelling. They won't take kindly to sitting around unused for a long period.

Now for the shoes - If she hasn't worn any of them for more than 6 months they go. Seasonally they change. While on the road you will need walking shoes, very comfortable walking shoes. You will need summer and winter shoes, eg sneakers, sandals, thongs, and maybe a dressy pair or 2 for that special occasion such as the anniversary dinner. If you're likely to attend any dancing events the pumps will have to stay.
Oh, you get the idea.
I'm sure new shoes will be purchased along the way as they wear out, but having an emotional attachment to shoes - I can't understand.
Let me be your minimalism guide.

Thanks Cruising Granny...
Your list is about what I personally own.. The good looking one would have 100 pair or more..
Would love to get a consultant in (minimalism Guide) to sort her out but I somhow dont think it would go down well...

I am however working on training the dog to bury them one by one in the back yard..

cheers

My plan is to get her out for a few trips and hopefully meet up with some of you so that we can slowly brain wash her into a minimalist clothing owner. :)

Nothing like attempting the impossible to make life interesting.

I need a minimalist to come here and sort me out as well. Knowing that you would never get back what you paid for something I think it would be much easier to just give it all away on the freecycle list rather than having to take photos etc and advertising on gumtree, ebay or wherever and probably not selling anyway. I advertised a 3 yr old treadmill for half price and didn't even get one offer. So do I sell or give away???

Hmm maybe I should buy the treadmill chain the good looking one to it and make her wear out all those shoes.. that might solve the shoe issue :)
