This rest area is north of Newman on the Great Northern Highway, WA.
It's only about 45 kms south of Auski Roadhouse. It's a free camp with a spectacular panorama of that area of the Pilbara.
I explored about 5kms of the tracks, which are fairly solid, but probably not in the west season. Although I'd like to see the waterfalls which form through the gorge.
Joe Tognilini was the engineer who designed and built the Great Northern Highway. It's a brilliant example of resourceful road construction through gorges and ranges. A plaque at the site tells of Joe and his work.
We also spent a night there in 2010. Happened to turn in just as a wide load vehicle came up the hill. They were shuting the road for klms because of what was being transported. They called us on uhf & we were assiting them for a while with what we knew was behind us,curious as to what would be coming & it took about an hour so they had the road shut for a lot of klms.
