Drove from Hellyer Gorge and called in at Wynyard to catch up with the internet after 3 nights with neither Optus or Telstra. Still no Optus phone reception.

Went on to Stanley to see The Nut and penguins at night so heres hoping for a good view at dusk. There is the option to take the chair lift up to the top of The Nut or climb up the zig zag track taking around 20 minutes, the walk round the top of The Nut takes about 40 minutes. We decided to walk up and down and the wind as we made it half way round was unbelievable we had to hang on the rails at the viewing station.

Three quarters around we descended into a treed valley and saw  Paddy Melons they look like small wallabies in need of shearing. They were quite tame and probably have no natural enemies up there and the visitors have to keep on the track so they hop around fearlessly. The paddy melons that is not the visitors.

We set up camp on Godfreys Beach below The Nut along with many other campers. It was very windy and I decided not to put up the pop top. Julia and Hanna set up their tent next to the van to take the shelter. We watched a couple more episodes of Mrs Browns Boys and by now they are converts understanding more each episode but the double entendres and slang make it hard.

We set off down to the beach at 9.30 and took up positions sitting on the bank and waiting for a view of the returning penguins. I had previously looked around and found some burrows with chicks so we were in a good spot, but as it got round to 10.15 and no returning mothers the girls went quietly to see if the chicks were waiting outside for their return. Sure enough they saw the young outside the burrows waiting and we called the episode off, it was very cold and windy and my glasses were covered in sea spray.     John
