Just been given a dynamo torch. Sold by Kathmandu. You just wind it up! Nice bright torch and a radio built in...comes with headphones! Torch part seems pretty good. Radio is cheapo!!
If you don't mind waiting a few weeks, then I've found these torches to be great, bought quite a few for friends etc - machined from aluminium alloy and water and drop resistant. They take either a single AA or a higher voltage battery and being CREE/LED they last a long time. Best thing is the price: $3.25 post paid. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7W-300LM-CREE-Q5-LED-Flashlight-Torch-Adjustable-Focus-Zoom-Light-Lamp-Black-/130842932878?pt=AU_Sport_Camping_Hiking_Lamps_Torches&hash=item1e76d8b68e
Edit...whoops - ignore that link - search for "torch" in Ebay and you'll find heaps. Thought the price was low as last time I paid just over $6 delivered. Apologies.

Also have a look at what is called a work light, available from super cheap or the likes.
Its a LED system, a small aray of led's in the end to work like a torch, then a large side area of led's to form a work light, both show a very good light system & the unit is rechargable from 240volt, &/or 12volt via cig lighter. Iv'e had one of these for about two years & still good. Also has a hook for hanging.
Also bought a couple of single LED units from auto barn around the same time, these take 3 AAA & have a very powerfull beam, light up large tree tops easy & are pocket size, about 125ml x 30ml, been very good & were only a few dollars. They are called Tomcat.

I bought a Led Lenser L7 from BCF. Normally they retail for about $90, but on special for $49. I use it every day at work and also at home a bit. It's powered by 3 AAA batteries and so far the first set of batteries have lasted 3 weeks. The beam is capable of spotting koalas up a gumtree and is adjustable to a wide angle for closer work, which is not so harsh on the eyes. A bit expensive, but a darn good torch. I have had quite a few of the cheaper ones and they always seem to go on the blink after a short while. This one seems to be a lot better though.
Lion sell the best one, they have a small spotty, very very bright and a smaller one to fit in the hand bag. both brighter than the Dolphin. they take aaa's and last a long time. led's have the same brightness until flat, don't go dim. try Mitre 10, as you should be, all independant, as with IGA. we will need them down the track to stop woollies and coles owning all the fuel and liquor outlets.
