Does any one know of a free camp site on or near the great ocean road. We are looking for one to stay just for one night , as we are traveling there late on a Friday night from frankston and would arrive around 8pm and don't wont to pay a night in a caravan park just to sleep. Any advise would be aprecated
yes but cant find any i thought some one may know of one thats not listed. i was under the impresion that this is what the forum was for to help each other
There are some, but I'm in Qld., and don't know how far you'll get before you want to stop for the night. There are a dozen in my Camps book, but it's only No 5.
Johanna Beach site 681. Good area, quite a bit of room but not always level sites. If you have a big van and arriving around 8pm the dark may work against you trying to find a niche to get into - definitely depending how busy it is at the time. I have stayed here and it is a good spot if you can find a level site.
Aire River East (site 679 Camps 6) and Aire River West (site 680 Camps 6) - I have not been in there, but if you have a big van it will be difficult to get in and find a spot. I have a big van so did not stop there.
Princetown Camping Reserve - site 683 Camps 6. Not a freebie but I believe small fee. Will take a big van but again not sure about an 8pm arrival. I hate to pay fees so didn't look at it.
There are very few free camps along the GOR.
I have used the Avalon Rest Area (site 570 Camps 6) - just beside the highway next to a largish servo. Toilets at the servo. Although a bit close to the highway it is not too noisy. If arriving at 8pm and just for the sleep it would be better than going further on to GOR and struggling in the dark. It would be my preference and then begin the new day fresh to head through Geelong and onward.

I was down at Lorne a few weeks back, I saw a Nissan patrol and LARGE van parked in the Main Street for the night,had the tv antenna up candles burning on the table having there tea,I don't know if that is allowed they were still there the next morning,bit cheeky don't you think.
thanks John we are getting a new 19 foot 6 van is that clasified as a big van ? we will take your advice and use the avalon rest area, it will be our first free camp and just a bit nervice on were to stay and what to do. any way we have to start some ware other wise we wont be able to make the big trip
Four don't allow dogs. I have not included them. These are between Geelong and Warrnambool, as well as the ones John has told you about.
As I said, my book is No 5., so the numbers will be different in the new book.

Open Google Maps and type this in -38.001168,144.494612 (or copy and paste it in).
Then use Street View and you will see the turnoff and the BP Servo. The 'rest area' is on the left before you continue along the off ramp to the Servo.

Hi tommo - this is a very helpful site - as Sheba says Camps Australia Wide no. 7 (came out in Feb this year) is a great investment - two free overnight stops will almost save you the cost of the book - the servo stop at Avalon, next to the servo is pretty good for an overnighter,hope you are not planning on heading down that way this Easter? Will be pretty packed I reckon - we stayed in a caravan park in Geelong the other night - Barwon River Tourist Park - think it is South Geelong actually - nice spot - not cheap, but comfortable with good facilities - we treated ourselves to an ensuite - $39 I think.

Just a word of caution about the content of the above, I am a contributor and was surprised yesterday to come home to find two motorhomes parked up in my front area.
They had found the location on Wikicamps and decided to come up for a visit overnight or longer. They could not ring due to no phone number or other contact details listed.
When I first listed the site (48hour stopover) contact details were advised and request for 24 hour notice so as our security arrangements could be relaxed so as to allow access, and to ensure that we had space or in fact home.
Our visitors said that there was no numbers so they could not ring, on checking the site, name had been changed to Big Rig and no mention of ringing before hand or numbers. (on checking the site was edited on the 5th March) but not by me.
This is a bit of a clich on the site as others other than original poster should not be able to edit data within the body of the listing.
My visitors were embarrassed about it as was I because we could not accommadate them due to reasons not appropriate on here.
users should be aware that changes can be made, and the location may not be as decribed.
I might add that it would seem that this is not the first wrong information found by these visitors.

I am only useing Wlkicamps pluss Oz camps saves lugging another bit of weight around. And have found that last years version was not right on a lot of occasions.

Some of us are a bit old fashioned, and like looking at a map on paper, as well as the information provided.
Plus - not sure if I am smart enought to have a smart phone!!!!
