Innamincka and Birdsville Track

G'day All, the better half and I will be heading off this weekend from Sydney through to Innamincka then via Birdsville and the Birdsville Track to the Flinders Ranges for the next couple of months. The offical road conditions reports from the various state and local authorities tell me the roads are OK for our setup, a Patrol towing an off road campertrailer, but what I would like to ask the forum is if anyone has (or knows someone who has) been in these areas recently and what the numbers of travellers I can expect to encounter. I prefer to bush camp as much as possible but if the numbers are high I want to know if it would be a good idea to book into caravan parks in advance to get a spot. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Cheers Griff

Hi, it's been awhile since I have been up that way, a lot will depend on when the last time the roads were graded, they can vary from bring very good to well something that should be avoided. If it rains while on the track be prepaid end to staynputvto the roads dry or use a lot of fuel slowly going fwd in 4wd. Having said that its a greatpartof this country and worth visiting

Innaminca is a good place to stop for a day or two, most people travel through it to get to somewhere else.We found out it is a great place with plenty to do and see. There are several dirt roads in and out of Innaminca and some are better quailty than others. The main accommodation in the town is what is knowen as The Town Common camp area, with about 50 odd camp sites set up along the banks of the cooper Creek. The is no facilities here, but showers and toilets opposite the general store and the pub. As far as shops go thats pretty much it. You can also camp in the Innaminca National Perk.( FEES APPLY HERE )If you want to go off touring just leave your rig at camp ..now this is one of the few places in Oz that it will be safe.Coongie Lake is well worth a visit. There is more cap sites there beside the lake.We cought a good feed of yabbies and a few fish from out of the Cooper. The Burk and Wills dig tree is worth the drive , situated on private property at the pastral station called Nappa Merrie.Entry fee when we were there was $11 per vehicle.A lot of info also provided about the tree. Also pop into the Cullyamurra Water Hole and Burk's grave. Nearby at InammincaChoke there is beautiful Aboriginal carvings in rocks believed to be thousands of years old.The pub hires canoes ,Innaminca has found it sekf bang in the middle of a mining boom , with the Moomba Basin nearby, so take it easy when driving on the roads around there , visibility can some times be a hazard on the roads. We headed south down the Old StrezeleckiTrack then on to the New Strezlecki Track to make our way to Arkaroola. Both these tracks were much rougher than the Birdsville track we had travelled up on.

Thanks Kym-Rose I'll keep my fingers crossed that the rain keeps away or is light, and to Herbie for the info on Innamincka as I was wondering if there was enough there to see and do other than the dig tree. Cheers Griff
