I have an old Freeway slide-on and, after reading a bit about slide-ons in various forums, decided to invest in a pair of helper springs (LoadPlus) to improve stability and ride. They cost about $125 (I think) on eBay from LoadPlus itself and I had my local Ford dealer fit them. Bill12 on this forum gave me the tip and he's travelled quite extensively with them in fairly rough country up in the Gulf area, and he reckons they're pretty good. I'm yet to do any serious travelling so you'll have to take Bill's word for it. I've heard about airbags as well but from what I gather they're more trouble than they're worth, as well as expensive.
