I have been peri-menopause for nearly 10 years. I was told 10 years ago that it would be 5-10 years for menopause to hit...she's still hiding....
i have had a bad run of hot flushes for the last couple of years, even having to take tablets which made it worse. I stopped taking the tablets and now a few months later the hot flushes have gone down from every few hours day and night, to almost non existent. My periods are every couple of months, but heavy and painful....
For those that are free of the peri side of it...
How long did it take?
Did you get any signs or symptoms?
I just want it to be over, it depresses me being in the unknown part or it. I have had blood tests done by my Gyneocologist, when she thought I had cervical cancer, I didn't, but she said menopause was only a year or less away....but I could cry as its not here yet.
Any stories or help would be much appreciated.
edited to add: I have lost 7kgs in weight in the last 2 months, not good when your not trying. I have been scanned all over and had numerous blood tests. I will find out today what hopefully is the cause of it. But can menopause cause this?

Ah yes, I can relate to all that Grams... it finally came and I give thanks for that every day! The hot flushes don't go away entirely but you find certain things that make it worse like drinking hot coffee. I met a lady in her 80's who said she still had those dreaded hot flushes! Other ladies are lucky and have none.
Weight loss would be a nice side effect but my weight stayed the same while I was still working, & is up a but now. Maybe you are eating less because of stress?

I suggest you talk to a good women's health nurse if you can find one- local area health service should have a clinic. These women have lots of tips, heaps of experience, and maybe a support group if you're lucky.
I have just got back from the GP with the results from a battery of tests I had done for the weight loss. I have Hyperthyroidism, the GP is pretty sure its Graves Disease...ghee another thing to add to my list of medical problems and more tablets to add to the piles I already take.
Gerty please don't even think of that...crap 80...no way. At least I only get them now and again, and usually while cooking. I have no idea why, but I sweat like a pig every time.
Rosie, I never thought of a Women's Health Nurse. Thank you, we have one at our local hospital :)
Thanks Ladies, the only other web site I am on is a mothers one and not many have reached that age yet...lol
Had to google Graves Disease! Since the specialist was considering a cancer, this has got to be good news, as it can be controlled with (another) pill! Let us know how you fare on the treatment Grams....
Yeah, 80 is bloody too old to be having hot flushes but the old lady told me it was so. I feel for her.
There's only one thing worse than the hot flushes Grams .... having a rebellious teenager at the same time as menopause. They don't warn you of that happening when you fall pregnant at an older age. I feel sorry (do I?) for all those who have left it to post-career to have their families. They won't know what's hit them. Sorry to hear you have Graves disease and hope you are soon through to the other end of menopause. It's not fun and yes, there could still be a hot flush or two but sometimes it's better than being too cold!
I have a 16 year old, and she is my 4th and last child to go through those raging teen hormones and being female makes it worse. S yes I know what he'll is like, and I'd prefer menopause any time...lol
Can i just say that i was diagnosed with Graves 30 something years ago. Once you start your medication and the dosage that's right for you, you will certainly feel much better.
Those hot flushes are terrible, and thankfully i dont get them anymore.
Good luck Jan

My sister, who had both a girl and a boy as teenagers together reckons she would rather have a girl than a boy.
The girl has a cycle- gets ratty, gets a period and is ok till she gets ratty again.
The boy gets ratty, gets smelly, gets rattier, room messier, gets rattier ....rattier......
My only boy, was immaculate, very OCD about his room and appearance. He had his 'I could kill him' moments, but my 3 girls have been the worse ever, 2 argue all the time, because they are right, the middle one has Aspergers and gets very emotional and cries. So I have had them every which way...lol. I am so looking forward to going away on our trip, just to get a break would be nice...I feel like I am running away...which I am of course lol
oh love, I hear what ya saying. This helped enormeously for me: I cut out almost all sugar for 6 months, I lost 5 kilos and wasn't trying and the hot flushes are so light they are hardly noticeable. I have given this lots of thought and sugar when heated gets very, very hot so it stands to reason if I have a lot of sugar inside me it will heat up more than usual and cause overheating. It could be wrong for you but it is working for me. good luck, we need it.
I went through menopause when I was about 45 ...... Happened about 2am one morning and finished around 2.05 am same day. here i am at 63 and still wondering what I have missed and why. I have read many stories about what women go through, the treatments and lots of horror stories, so, I do feel for any woman who is experiencing things other than a sense of freedom at this time in their life. Hang in there ...

My Dad was put on hormone treatment. He knew what it was like to go through menopause. Kept a record of his hot flushes. Mild ones in blue, bad ones in red!!! (He was a list-maker). What got me was, because he had hot flushes, the GP was able to give him something for it. Why can't they do that for women???
Because of my Ulcerative Colitis and Depression problems blah blah, my doctor said I didn't need to have to deal with menopause as well. So I was to stay on the pill til I was 50. When I reached 49, I though bugga it, I'm going off it. That was it. Not a period since, and only a bit of the flushes.
I'm 59 now and that part of my body is fine. It's just the rest of my body that's cracking up and falling apart.
I do feel for women who suffer so badly.
Good luck grams.

I do feel better now I have been on the tablets, the only problem has been...I put the weight back on I lost....damn I was feeling good about that too.
I went to my GP with a list of things I wanted to tell him and prescriptions I needed...and I forgot to talk to him about helping me with this menopause thing....I have had enough, I cant take having periods anymore, they are so heavy and so long I cant move for the first 3 days. I'm even allergic to all sanitary pads, so using them is so painful. I am going to ask for the Depro injection so I dont ever need to have them again. So now I have an appointment in 2 weeks....wish me luck :)
