Am considering changing our 100 series Land Curiser from all wheel drive to just front wheel drive. It has been suggested that I look into it. Not sure if it's a good idea or not. A few people have said its a saftey thing while others have said you really don't need it set up like that. I will plead ignorance on this so I name just putting it out there for comments? To complete the picture we are towing a 22 ft Roadstar van. Looking forward to you comments and have no real thoughts on this topic either way, just would like to see your opinions.
Thanks
Brian.

Hi Brian, I also own a 100 series turbo. If yours is the IFS model then my thought is that you would put too much load on the front diff as I'm told they are a bit sus when it comes to loading them up. Rgds
Hi Brian. I understand why you want to go to 2wd but don't understand why one would go front wheel drive, while it would put stress on the c/v joints which are the weakest point of a 100 series front axle drive line. I own a 100 series petrol to which I have fitted a 2wd conversion kit from Marks 4wd adaptors. It is a kit that replaces a gear in the transfer box and allows 2wd , it includes a set free wheel hubs for the front axle so with the hubs locked and the axle lock switch on it gives you 4wd. I have experienced 10 to 15 % better economy or if you like 100 to 150 klm per tank full and this is a petrol, I also can notice better pulling power and lighter steering. So it is worth the $1000 or so to get it fitted. I think this would be a better option than going front wheel drive only.
There's a truckload of info on LC's on the LCOOL site. You'll get all the info you can handle and then some when you raise a topic such as this. I started on LC's in 1966 and this is the first time I've heard of changing to front wheel drive only. Personally I'd retain the option of 4wd if you do go that way, as one comment suggested the CV's are a weak link in the front end. The live axle LC's had better CV's but aren't cheap to fix either. Why not convert to part time 4wd like a lot of LC owners do and use RWD to tow the van ?

Thank you one and all. I was not actually contemplating doing this mod. I sort of suspected that your answers would be what I got. It was more a curious question rather than I'm going to do this. Once again thank you for your comments and I think I will leave things where they are.
Brian
