Undara Lava Tubes

Wednesday morning and I left Archer Creek driving to Mt. Garnett where I did get internet in 2012 and expected to do so again. Success and I was able to catch up with the blog and forum.

After I drove to the Undara Lava Tubes and booked into a powered site and went on a conducted tour $70 all up. So now I am powered up on everything but didnt need to charge up the batteries. I had charged up the cameras second battery so there was no excuse for me forgetting to take the camera on the tour.

I will buy a couple of the postcards and copy them, at least I could have taken the shots its not like I am cheating, posting where I had not been. There is some feature this evening at 8pm about the bush and National Park and I intend to attend as well as the bush breakfast. No internet here unless I pay for Wi Fi will check out the price when I buy the postcards and book in for the breakfast.

Well so much for that the internet was down and the breakfast was $24.but I did get the postcard for $3 with several pictures of the tubes. Incidentally dont go to Undara in need of petrol $1.98 and diesel $1.95. Had a swim in the pool and took advantage of the showers now looking forward to the bush night at 8pm, better take a torch or could get lost like I did in Millmerron.

The night talk round a big open fire was about crocodiles, the man doing the talk had many slides showing the differences between salt water, freshwater and alligators. It was very interesting and the most important message that he was getting across is to be at least 5 metres from the bank because the biggest croc loses impetus after a couple of metres.

The croc gets his lunge from his tail and if he can reach you his element of surprise is enough to get you seized but he cant catch you if his lunge falls short. The spokesman said that stories of crocs running down a sprinting man are impossible, their legs are very short and their belly drags on the ground. I suppose that it would balance out if the man was in the same condition.   John

There are frog races, co-ckroach races, snail races, camel races and every other kinda races in Oz except crocodile races, so there ya go. If crocs could race, Aussies would bet on them.

Guess what! I have actually been to croc races. We were at Darwin quite sometime ago now, at the Polocrosse Nationals, and yes, there were croc races. The crocs were about 18" long and they just let them go in their separate lanes and first to the end won!! I actually had a joke with a friend and said to her that she had put her name down to be a crocodile jockey - (she had consumed a couple of drinks at the time) - so she was quite worried until she saw what was really going on and also the size of the crocs. One of her main questions was how would she ride it? I replied they probably put a saddle and bridle on it like a horse. We had lots of laughs out of this anyway. Happy camping

The Undarra Lava Tubes are a wonderful phenomenon of nature, and you photos and lighting catch them at their best. Good job!
I did the Savannahlander rail trip from Cairns and apart from a great trip in stainless steel rail cars, it passes through beautiful and diverse country, including the wonderful Coburg Gorge which you can't access by road.
Isn't this a wonderful country?
