A friend and I, both towing small caravans, are planning to travel to Burke and Wills dig tree and Innamincka this year.
Looking at traveling on tar for the best part of the trip, (because we are a bit scared of dirt) we plan to pass through Moree to Carnarvon Hwy, cross the border at Mungindi to St George, then the Balonne Hwy to Cunnamulla, then onto Bulloo Road. Looking at the map the tar stops a bit before Nappa Merrie.
We don't have the confidence to do off road towing, so if possible, we would like to leave the caravans at Noccundra Hotel to continue in the xtrail (distance being around 200k) for an overnighter in a tent, to check out the Cooper Creek area.
Could anyone help with our questions,
1. Advise about the state of Bulloo Road and the direction we intend to travel.
2. The possibility of leaving the caravans at the Hotel or is there a closer spot.
3. Do you think this trip is feasible for two older females.
4. Any other advice please.
And if anyone is interested in joining us on our trip, they are also welcome.
Hello Eureka - I have been out that way before (a few times) and really I wouldn't say that the roads are 'off-road' as such. I find that the main roads out that way are big gravel roads that are mostly well maintained - it really is just a case of driving to the conditions. When are you thinking of going out there? You would find that at this time of year it would be very hot. Innaminka is a beautiful place to visit especially down on the Copper Creek. Yes and I would think that this trip is quite feasible for two older females. We came over from Birdsville on the Cordilla Downs road and yes it was rough - the other way was quite good. Anyway whatever you decide have fun.
We stayed at the Noccundra Hotel last year. $20 for powered site and $5 just to leave it (parked next to hotel so quite safe) Water was a bit suss, very pale brown.
40k of dirt before Nappa Merrie is good. When travelling on the bitumen and you have to go off to the side for the roadtrains, watch the potholes, some of it is a bit rough.
