Freedom Camp, Quaalup Wilderness Retreat

Heritage house built 1858, unpowered campsites available for $12.00 per person per night.  Clean toilets and showers, drinking water available.  In the Fitzgerald River National Park, near Bremer Bay.  Best Access via Devil's Creek Road from Gairdner.

I stayed there one night (run by the owners a German couple).   Very different, the gravel road can get a bit corrugated in places (I went in from the Bremer Bay Road entry).  I believe the road coming in from the main southern highway is really bad according the the owners of the campsite.

Agree Vic, I would not have towed the van in through the road from Bremer Bay.  Devils Creek Road from Gairdner is about 30% bitumen, more to come.  the rest on that route is good quality.  The drive from the camp site to Bremer Bay is classed as 4WD. and definitely only a dry weather road.

The plus side of this site is the per person rate of $12.00 per person per night.  makes a change from caravan parks who charge per site, regardless of solo or couple.

I think I went the same way as you maybe, it was off the road between Bremer Bay and Ravensthorpe, it was bitumen part of the way, wasn't the 4WD track direct from Bremer Bay.   When I left I went out on another road (all gravel) that came out onto the southern highway.

Two ways from Bremer Bay, one 4WD over off the beach near the inlet, and over the dunes, the second via Swamp road, then into Murray Raod, bitumen part of the way.  At the intersection of Murray Road, there is a choice, right or left.  To the left is good quality grave (Murray Roadl, but to the right is dry weather only.  We used the second choice when we went for a drive into Bremer, but with out the van.  For anyone interested, below are instructions off their web site - and map attached.  Vic, see you met Edna the Emu. She had gone walkabout when we were there.

From Albany it is km 180, stay on the South coast HWY, pass Boxwood Hill, leave the HWY directly after Gairdner (a few houses and a wheat bin) follow our signs into Devils Creek Rd and after approx 30km into Collets Rd and finally into Gairdner Rd

From the Stirling Ranges it is 120km, travelling south towards South Coast HWY via the Borden- Boxwood Hill Road (Boxwood Hill is a Roadhouse) through the Corackerup Nature Reserve. Turn left onto the HWY towards Jerramungup and leave the HWY after Gairdner follow our signs into Devils Creek Rd, after approx 30km into Collets Rd and finally into Gairdner Rd.

From Perth CBD to Quaalup it is 520km  using the following route:

tidbul1e.gif

Stay on the Albany HWY until Arthur River, here turn left to Wagin.

tidbul1e.gif

From Wagin follow the Great Southern HWY, passing Katanning and Broomehill.

tidbul1e.gif

After Broomehill turn left towards Gnowangerup, from there follow the road to Ongerup and Jerramungup.

tidbul1e.gif

From Jerramungup travel on the South Coast HWY towards Albany, after 28km turn left follow our signs into Devils Creek Road, after approx 30km into Collets Rd and finally into Gairdner Road.

From Bremer Bay it is 47km via Swamp Road ( , bitumen and gravel),

tidbul1e.gif

Follow our Signs into Swamp Rd, Gordon Inlet Rd, Murray Rd, Devils Creek Rd, into Collets Rd and finally into Gairdner Rd.

The 4WD track from Bremer Bay  is open, ( 17km rough track ), can be impassable when wet

Make sure you fuel up at Boxwood Hill (coming from Stirling or Albany), Jerramungup (coming from Perth or Esperance) or in Bremer Bay.

The GPS reading is:     WGS 84; 34° 15.602'S; 119° 24.603'E

Please don't use a GPS in this area it will not work, maps are much better.

Regards Edna the Emu, yes she was poking around the place when I was there.   The grave site near the bush walk track was interesting.

Yes, for those interested in the history of Quaalup Homestead including the gravesite they can read it here;

We stayed here late February. There is no longer any water supplied to the sites. As to whether this will be fixed in the future is unknown.
Fees are unchanged.

There was bore water for the showers and no water to the sites when I was there (about 12 months ago) but there was a drinking water tank near the campers kitchen or thereabouts.  May have been fed by rainwater run off from the roof, I can't recall.
