I dont have a van yet when I go for a road trip for a couple of days I book into a pet friendly caravan park or Motel that allow the pets indoors I have a little foxy who lives in my back pocket ;)
I am looking for somewhere to stay next week for a couple of nights in the NSW Northern Rivers I know its holiday season but gee prices are up :(
I am wondering about getting myself a little tent and using non powered sites instead I dont mind camping but I have never been on my own before and I would have to buy all the gear?
Do you think it will be safe enough in a caravan park on my own with the dog?
Hi Jen.In a park I would feel safe.I have travelled many years on my own or with a girlfriend friend, do not stay in parks because of the cost, but rather rest areas or the bush.In 35 years of travel have never encounted any issues. MY advice is always be aware of your saroundings and who you tell that you travel alone. just get out there and enjoy our beautiful country
Jenr, the cost of your camping gear can be as little as a couple of nights in a motel. After that you are in front. Of course you can always spend more on fancy stuff but not necessary. Most caravan parks have a camp kitchen so that reduces a lot of stuff you'd need to take with you for bush camping. Have met quite a few single ladies tenting, no worries. Enjoy.
Have met a few women who camp solo in a tent - one lady we met in Tasmania, camped in a tent with her small car, and her little dog Otis, for three months - Happier lady you would find harder to meet
If you are going into caravan parks, as Gerty says, most have camp kitchens, usually with kettle, hot plates, pots, toaster, etc, so just take a cheap plate, cup, cutlery, and your food. Most of the camp kitchens I have seen have fridges as well, you just name your items.
Ask at the park when you go in to book.
Get out there and enjoy it - don't worry about what "might" happen!!!!

G'day Jen, if you take everyones advice here, you will be fine. We come across lots of single lady travelers, 95% have a small bus and all seem pretty happy. Have met a couple who have tents, it was rare many years ago, not now, lots of ladies on the road and having a wonderful time. Just one suggestion, don't take anything for granted and until you become used to this life, use van parks or camp with others, especially if you are using a tent, or well away from main roads. If you like it enough to take it on full time, my advice would be to look for a small bus, this gives you that extra security and put a big collar with studs on your little one, to make it look more fierce, lol. Enjoy your sojourn.

Thank you for your replies I received an email from a park at Yamba called Fishing Haven they have a cabin (no ensuite) for $50 night and the dog can come inside. I am going take this offer up for this time but still seriously going to look into getting a small van down the track so then I can go well almost anywhere I want ;)
Hi Jen, I had a tent & travelled with my little dog in caravan parks, I have a camper now & after knowing the Grey Nomads I could have free camped in the tent. Keep in touch & let us know when you get on the road. From a happy little camper Patty.

Just get out there and do it. Talk to the locals about camping spots. Van parks are good to get your confidence up.
There are thousands of women out there on their own travelling in one form or another. Some in tents and camper vans, while others have relative luxury in motorhomes.
I travelled with my caravan for 2 years, and then worked on the road with my Landcruiser, camping outside the car in a cot tent. Very comfortable except in the Pilbara in the wet season, (hot and sweaty) or on the Nullarbor in the middle of winter, (freezing cold).
Associating with GN's has given me great friends all over the country. Well, I think they are, but they may think otherwise.
If you can drive up to the shops on your own, you can travel a thousand kms on your own, as long as you know your vehicle and keep it well maintained. It's your lifeline.
It might be worth your while investing in a car fridge and a butane gas cooker for time at roadside parking bays without bbq facilities.
The vehicle in my avatar is my new work vehicle and an investment in my future travelling expeditions.
These days when I travel I'm usually accompanied by other pilot vehicle drivers and the truckies, most of whom are great travelling companions and have become good friends.
Just get out there and do it!
All the best to you. Safe and happy travels.

Hi, if your budget is tight. you could go to the op shops and buy some camping gear to get you going. I have travelled solo at times and it is great fun. showgrounds are cheaper than caravan parks and usually allow dogs too. there is sometimes a caretaker and they could direct you where is best to set up a tent. have stayed in lots of caravan parks with a tent and no problems. sooo get out there, have fun, enjoy.
