Hi, I will be travelling by caravan around Australia for all of 2015 starting from Perth. We have 2 young daughters and are keen to experience the snow for a number of days, when we are over east. Can anyone recommend a spot to camp that is above the snowline - free camping or a caravan. I'd like to be above the snowline to enjoy the experience of the snow etc at night as well. Regards Phil
Hi Doogsy, welcome to the Forum. There are a few options re spending some time with your caravan to experience the snow close to Thredbo, if you're in that area of N.S.W. Jindabye is the nearest town, about 30 odd k's from the Thredbow Village. It's below the snow line, but snow is not unknown there and it has two caravan parks. One is Discovery Holiday Park, Jindabyne (Ph. 02 6456 2009) and the Jindabyne Holiday Park (Ph: 02 6456 2249). Also, there's the Kosciuszko Mountain Retreat at Sawpit Creek (Ph: 02 6456 2224) about 13 k's west of Jindabyne. There are a few camping areas in the Kosciuszko National Park (Tom Groggin, Thredbo Diggings etc.,) but they are accessed via The Alpine Way and it is a winding road and it's suitable for small vehicles only. Hope this is use to you, have a wonderful time on your trip around Oz. Safe travels, Annie
Welcome from us too Doogsy. I'm not sure the tourist office could tell you. It only snows in Oberon when the weather says so. Not predictable like the Snowy Mtns. Camping above the snow line would be a hassle I would think as you would need snow chains for your car and I'm not sure you can pull a caravan in snow. If you had a motorhome it would be more possible. Needs checking out. Enjoy planning your trip.
