Suspension Upgrade

Hi All, i am seeking advise on suspension upgrade for my 23ft Traveller caravan.

I am after upgrade for following reasons

a. van is getting on in years and has leaf double eye springs (tandem), rather replace now than have fail.

b. Van is low profile and i dont want to just do a axle under or rotate axle to gain height

c. I would like to match tyres/rims to my landcruiser so less spares to carry

d. low profile dosnt allow for some places we travel

I would also like some recommendations for suppliers/fitters in Queensland area and any issues i may come across with certification etc.

So if I could get answers on

type recommended and why

who can do it

approx cost if you know

If you have had done

Thanks

Herb,

Suppliers/fitters in QLD. at my last look it's a pretty big place LOL.

If You are in the SE corner Caboolture Caravan Repairs did a fairly major lift and suspension upgrade for me a couple of years ago. They took care of everything all I needed to do was get a weighbridge certificate on my way to them and provide some money.

Adrian on 0754951966 (likes a chat). They had the engineer inspect & provide compliance plate etc. This is a must do.

Mike.

cool, sort of info I'm after. As for QLD, nice place. I'm not fussed where I go to get it done, At moment heading down East coast. Heard may be one in Bundy or Gympie and also another in Coulandra. As yet haven't been able to get names or actual companies. As I'm on no time frame to get anywhere can stop where necessary.

Hi Herb,

We have a 2012 Traveller which we bought new 'off the floor'. I too needed it raised and fitted with 16" wheels.

I had an extra 75mm chassis rails put in between the suspension and existing chassis to raise the whole rig. This and the change to larger wheels made all the difference. The cost of installing the new rails was around $500 from memory and done by Roadmaster Caravans in Adelaide.

Personally, I would not contemplate under slinging an axle as I have actually seen what happens if a U-bolt lets go and there's nothing to capture the axle when it heads rearwards! It ain't pretty and the damage is extensive.

I also know that the chassis raiser is the way that Traveller do it in their factory. They are at Cambellfield, Victoria. Zoran is the factory manager, a very nice and helpful bloke if you feel like discussing with the manufacturer.

Good luck with the mod's.

I bought a complete rocker system for my car ( carrying) trailer off eBay for around $350 delivered .. All I had to do is weld / bolt spring hanger in place.. Way way cheaper and better suspension than old system..
The rocker type travels way better over speed bumps. Giving smooth ride.
Can order to different spring rates also . I think he was trailer King in Vic ? ..

cheers aus-kiwi, my welding skills, albiet I am qualified, I wouldn't trust. had considered doing what you have said but want to get certified so can carry greater load as i like many overload my live in home. Thanks for the comment another idea, more the better. i remember once doing a over spring and my son hit bump broke u bolt and jackknifed breaking drivers side wing mirror Now I prefer to leave to those that offer guarantee. I have seen pictures of a broken u bolt on 3 ton caravan.......... not pretty.

Vehicle Components is in Geebung, Queensland. Your one stop shop for CruiseMaster suspension. My van is fitted with their independent coil suspension but I wish it had their airbag suspension. A much lazier way to level the van.

Yep get a qualified welder and engineer to check and sign off the work.

Which should be done no matter who does it!

Over spring  the weight is on U bolts .. Don't tell me you didn't up grade the U bolts ?
