G'day to all fellow Grey Nomads

My wife and I are Yanks. We have been retired for seven years and full-time RV'ing (caravaning) for seven years come December. Sold the sticks and bricks and were gone. Have read that Aussies have gone heavily into solar and lithium batteries as have we. This is one of our primary interests.

Started with a 28' (8.4 m) pulled by a Chevie 2500 (3/4 ton) van. We took this to Alaska, Baja California, Yucatan (Mexico) Everglades, Newfoundland and Labrador. This had 400 W of solar and four glass mat batteries.

We changed to 34' (10.2 m) Open Range fifth wheel pulled by a GMC 6.6 liter diesel 4 x 4. We took this down to Yucatan/Belize/Guatemala twice. This rig was demolished in a 70 car pile up coming back near Puebla, Mexico (younger son has noted that we went down to Yucatan three times and returned twice). Mexican diesel is $2.75 US/gallon (about $.70 US/liter), a dollar less than US.

Got basically the same rig again last year but this time a Chevie (no different from GMC) 6.6 liter dualie. Solar is now 1420 W and 9.6 kW-hours of lithium iron batteries.

Spent time in RVN where prcht battalion (4/503rd PIR) replaced 1/RAR in 173rd Abn. Was trained at Recondo School by an Aussie SAS platoon Sgt for three weeks and spent my tour with foot recon (LRRP). Spent 34 years as scientist at White Sands Missile Range.

Did not want to retire and did not want to sell house and wander about. But it is the best thing we have ever done and I have the right gal to do it with.

Should love to make it to Australia and rent a caravan to see your great coiuntry.

Reed and Elaine Cundiff
