Just found this post - so I hope Simrod checks back - appears to be a relatively new member, so welcome aboard.
We have been to Brooms Head on numerous occasions and found it great ...... except on Public Holidays and even worse, School Holidays when its just one great tent city. Last time we were there we got a Seniors Card discount. It is very quiet and peaceful ... bowling club an easy walk ... local general store has basic necessities - nearest shops are at Maclean. Sites are split into the north and southern sections .... we stay in the northern area and the sites are all roomy and you can get sites with an ocean view or the road - the sites closest to the road were the cheapest. The beaches are all fenced off but there are steps leading down. I can't be sure, but I don't believe it is a patrolled beach, however, there is a nice area enclosed by rocks which is popular with kids and snorkelling. Amenities are not new, but clean and in good condition. It has been a year since we were there, so can not say if anything has changed. I believe the park is administered by the Clarence Council. There is a great walk into the national park and along the headlands and steps down to the little beach inlets - great if you enjoy looking for interesting shells. Kangaroos roam the campgrounds during the night and a fair few can be seen at the oval - the biggest one I have ever seen was at Brooms Head. If you go, don't get too close to any of the big ones - they would pack a punch!
If you are into kayaks/canoes, make sure you check out the Sandon River - a beautiful place to explore and spend a few hours on the water. Brooms Head is almost a 20klm drive from the Pacific Highway at Maclean - on the way you can check out the camping areas in the National Park along the Brooms Head Road - not sure of the cost, but you can check online. Be careful driving on the road into as there are lots of roos on - we actually hit one a couple of years back - did a bit of damage, but he just turned around, gave us a look and off he went!
Went in to Brooms Head to christen our new van in November during the quiet time. It really is a great place and we had a good experience with the caravan park management. The beaches on both side of the headland are much more wild than the sanitised ones on the Gold Coast. It really is a step back into the past. We chose a site in the Southern end of the park which gave us great views over the bay to Angourie. Lots of beach to walk, especially to the South of the headland - take the stroll down to Sandon River.
The caravan park and adjacent beaches are best in a South East or Southerly breeze. Anything from the North can leave the surf a little choppy and the annexe flapping.
The drive in from Maclean is OK and well worth the effort. There is a small village store and Bowls Club for supplies if needed.
