Welcome Debussey (Freddo) - I personally don't know anywhere in Darwin to free camp, but I am sure someone will give you some ideas. My son lived in Darwin for a while, in his 40ft bus, woke up one morning, stepped out the door and wondered where his concrete step was - yep the wind had moved the bus about five feet, he felt nothing of it, but he did tie down after that.

I don't know od any free spots to park up in Darwin. The least expensive caravan park we found was at the Polo Club. Head up the main drag into Darwin but take a left turn when you see the sign for the jail. Then it is the first right. You will come to a gate which may be closed but it will have a notice on it with caretaker's phone number.
Like you we are going against the odds & spending time in Cairns at the wrong time of the year. Very dry here though. Wish the rains would start.
May be wrong but think the polo club is only open during the normal season, our youngest lived and worked in Darwin for 2 years. There is a little spot near one of the boat ramps that was ok to stay for a short while. But generally due to the hordes of back packers doing the wrong thing, Darwin is not too free camp friendly I'm afraid.
I'd like to be in the West during the wet season I'm planning to but I want to be in Broome. I traveled from Darwin to Broome last May (in a hire motorhome) We stayed at a Caravan park called Roebuck bay Caravan Park it was very reasonable and maintained well.. but I haven't really done anything else yet. Just getting set up now to travel next year.

First of all, this time of year, well maybe just a bit later or very early in the new year, is great! As long as you do not mind a bit of humidity of course! But when those storms come in, wow!
I lived in Darwins' northern suburbs for some 10 years until almost 3 years ago and if I thought I could rent a place and still have enough money to eat I would go back next week!
Not freedom camp friendly at all in close to town.
You could try putting some sort of ad in The NT Times if you don't mind being a bit further out...there a few places out a bit where the 'ferals' will put another vehicle (sorry Doo crew I am not referring you to guys as ferals).

We are fortunate to have a nephew living at Humpty Doo where we spend winter this year. Unfortunately we can't help you. Hopefully the DooCrew can. There is a cheap camp near the Litchfield turn off. Coomalie RV Park $10.00 per night, unpowered, can't remember how much for power.

Spent quite a bit of time in Broome and Darwin during the wet season, the lightning, thunder, and storms were stunning, especially seeing the red Kimberley mountains with massive waterfalls tumbling down. I lost buckets of weight with the humidity, the more water I drank, the more it poured out of my body, the humidity and heat literally burns your lungs.
