Mirrors or Camera ?

Hi all I was having a discussion with the son in law ,  yesterday regarding the side camera's that he has on his new van . He has them on both sides and rear and according to him work very well. I then asked him if he still has the proper mirrors , he said" nah don't need them, I can see every thing behind me on the screen.."

My question is he legal ?Does one still have to have suitable mirrors even if cameras are fitted to the van?.

My feeling is yes you do even if its just for peace of mind , you never know when these things stop working or whatever.

Your opinions please.

Dhutime

He is not legal.
Mirrors (that do the job properly) are required by law.

Cheers,
peter

Peter is quite correct. It is mirrors that police look for along your van from behind and if they cannot see any the driver may have a few questions to answer.

I say the law will read something like one rear view external mirror on the drivers side when your internal mirror view is blocked so as to allow you to see down the side of vehicle.

But I would say it would be nice to have magic mirrors that would see the rear of your van or the back of our load? Ralph.

One day cameras will replace mirrors in the law but as yet, mirrors MUST be fitted to allow vision down both sides of any trailer.

We are now at the stage we were at many years ago.  Back then it was LAW that a protruding arm signal had to be used to signal intention to deviate from the current course of your vehicle.

Turn right, turn left or stop had to be signalled with your arm.

Then someone invented electric indicators that clearly showed any following driver that you intended to turn left or right.

Now you didn't need to put your arm outside on even a cold, wet night.  Or did you?

Yes you did, it took the law a long time to catch up and realise there was a better way.

Now it is illegal to have your arm out the window.

Just as, one day it will be illegal to have a mirror protruding wider than the factory fitted ones.

I agree, Law for sure.

I have Clear View Mirrors with reverse camera fitted to the tug and rear camera fitted to the back of the Den. All great and all do their own thing. I am glad I invested in all of them, great vision where needed.

I believe the law states you must have a clear view of the side of your vehicle. If you have a camera and your normal vehicle mirrors cover the area not covered by the cam you can argue you comply with the law. My drivers side mirror got stolen (mongrels) and I have passed many police and RTA waiting to get home, touch wood I have not been pulled over. I have a long range cam, not a reversing cam and find it great.

The wording on the NSW roads and maritime service

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/towing.html

Additionally:

  • Extra mirrors may be needed for the towing vehicle if towing a large trailer.
  • note  MAY be needed

Mmm, I have heard from a reliable source that your mirrors are on the roof. Not sure why though confuse

My previous reply still stands PLUS If you can afford them get both.
