Wikicamps

I was given a Samsung Galaxy Tab4 tablet for Xmas as my old Tab was getting like me - a bit unreliable and prone to shutting down when I wanted it (wife has been complaining of this failure for 67 years now).

Anyway, I decided to put the Wkicamps app on it and see if I got any benefit from it because the fee is only $7 or so.

I have several email a/cs and it should have taken my gmail one but wouldn't.  I emailed the site webmaster from my laptop and told him my problem.  He replied almost straight away and fixed it within 30 mins.

Spend most of last night reading all the topics.

The webmaster, Russell, intends to bring back live chaat again early this year (he took it down apparently a few months ago when it started to get nasty and personal (sounds kinda familiar now doesn't it !!)

BTW  The Tab4 does has problems with some on-line app sign-ons for the first time, so don't think you are dumb (well, I am, according to my beautiful wife who has to remind me every day that I love and worship the ground she floats on).

Hi Bruce & Bev, One you get used to WikiCamps you will never use anything else again. We just love the up to date comments and pictures that you can see. If you have your tablet set up to keep track of your location you will be able to watch yourselves driving toward the camp spots on the map. Not sure that we will ever take the heavy Camps 6 book away again. Don't forget to download the "off line" content so you can still have all the data even when you have no phone connection...assuming you are setting the tablet up with a sim card and using it for internet etc. as well. Have fun. Cheers, Brownie2

We find wiki camps very useful, however, don't make your decision completely on comments. How do you decide on a free camp when one person says it is great with plenty of room
then another says it is terrible because there is no toilet paper in the toilet

Neil & Raine. Youre so right with your comments - the same applies to CP's. Most people would say a certain CP or free camp is great, but one person for whatever peculiar reason doesn't like it and gives it an adverse rating

There are numerous threads discussing Wikicamps on this forum, just do a search.

The price was mentioned 5 posts ago at the start of this thread.

Hi Betty Boop, We have used it for a couple of years now, and love it. If you travel with a Tablet and use that for your internet etc. (ie. have a sim card and use it for your email and googling) it has great features. As has been stated, the comments about camps and CP's can be varied, but you can usually sift out the chaff without too much trouble. For example, you might get 6 positive opinions, then have one person complain that there was no water tap in the free camp......need I say more. It only costs a few dollars and is easily downloaded from your "Apps Store" for about $7 I think. Used to be $3. You will need to become a registered user (easily done once it's downloaded) so you can post your pictures and comments. You can mark any site that fellow travelers tell you about as a favorite to make it easily found later, and remember the good ones you visit. It is a great thing to use as you travel to find exactly where you are on their Map. As previously mentioned, it saves carting around the bulky "Camps" book and others. It gives street addresses as well as GPS co-ordinates as does the "Camps" book.
As you can tell, we are big fans. You can download it to your smart phone too if you don't have a Tablet.
I can't think of any negatives, but others will have opinions. It is really worth getting it for such a small outlay and make sure you really get used to all its features. Ask for help if you need to.
Have fun, Cheers, Bob

I use WikiCamps and love it, however, I was taking to a fellow traveller recently who had one of the cheaper tablets - downloaded WikiCamps and could not get the maps to work properly. Apparently there was no Location Services on the tablet he had which limited the functionality of WikiCamps.  Just a thought for anyone buying a tablet to make sure they make sure what the device is capable of doing and in particular has location services. To be honest, I am not sure what Location Services is but I believe it is something to do with how the maps are displayed and/or pinpointing your location.  I know I have no problems with my iPad or my Win 8.1 laptop, but thought it was an interesting issue to post about.

Cheers

Depending on his tablet, it may or may not have location services available. Mainly they are WIFI/mobile networks, GPS receiver, as well as Google Location Services. If the services are available, they may not have been enabled in his setting..

From the WWW

Here's how to enable Location Services:

Go to your device's Settings menu and select Location.*
Select the location options that you want to use:
Enable Google Location Services.
Enable Wireless networks to allow the phone to determine your approximate location by using Wi-Fi and mobile networks.*
Enable GPS services to allow your phone to determine your location to street-level accuracy. GPS works best when you have a clear view of the sky.*

*Note: Exact instructions for your Android device may vary. Not all location options may be available for all devices.

I don't understand what gives someone the right to complain about a lack of toilet paper when the camping is free, gratis. Be thankful.

Let's face it. Some people aren't happy unless they have something to complain about.
We were at one free camp where someone complained on Wikicamps that the grass needed cutting.

I always take my own anyway. Nothing worse than getting caught short with an empty roll holder, then having to walk back to van then back to toilets b4 you can go. You are taking very small steps by the time you get there sometimes.

We use both Wiki and the Camps 7 - I like to look at a map, and see where we are, pick a site, read about it, then check it out on Wiki - often there are varying opinions of sites - the one we are at now was described as "disgusting dust bowl, no water, no paper in loo, and noisy boats" - hello, inland Oz is often a dust bowl, water in this country is precious, and people do waste it. As for loo paper, even if it is provided I prefer my own, and noisy boats - you are next to a river, with a boat ramp, if you want total quiet, find another spot. But that was only one contributor, all others loved the place.
