Just to liven the show up, I thought I would touch on the subject of deafness.

I'm very, very deaf, with out my hearing aids I would be lost. I use a blue tooth communicator with between my mob phone and hearing aids. Its the best thing out, apart from being a bit rude, i.e. when a call comes through it takes over , no matter who you are talking to.

I use my Sennheiser head phones to listen to TV. And constantly wonder why women cant give me yes or no answers rather than the 1000 words that mean neither and then wonder why I don't know what they're talking about.

What about those you tell, that you are a little deaf can they speak at you, they say "Sorry, I'll shout so you can hear" but no you try and explain, that makes it worse, just look at me when you talk. They do and that lasts about a minute.

I have to wear glasses for close work now, and they are a bloody nuisance, but I feel hearing loss is a much worse condition. For instanceif you can't see something then you say wait a mo, I'll put my glasses on, ahh that's better, and you look or read what you have to. But when you're deaf and you don't understand that noise or word, its gone traveling at 500 mph, you don't get a second chance.

OK your turn!

Hi Iana I too am a little deaf and i should go and get fitted for a pair of hearing aids.I don't think they are too bad so far but according to

the wife she says they are.I just call it selective hearing ,it's a man thing.

Hi Iana

I know what you are talking about ,I have government issue hearing aids they are about to be replaced with good ones,I have trouble hearing anyone hoo talks to fast, sometimes I have to get my wife to repeat what she said two or three times ,it is annoying to her and frustrating for me, but life goes on.

I thought the same thing before I got my hearing aids ,you don't realise how deaf you are the sounds of birds ,and running water ,wind , motor vehicles, if yor wife says you need hearing aids you do because they are never wrong. Cheers

My elderly B-I-L is profoundly deaf (industrial deafness) and a few years back he was issued with a cochlea implant, which he has major issues with.  Subtitled TV for him and an I-Pad for his wife help.

An amusing anecdote:  When B-I-L speaks, he does not whisper, he SHOUTS.  Sister has a little laminated card in her wallet.  One morning (in the wee hours) at Caboolture hospital she had to show her card to him.  It read "PLEASE LOWER YOUR VOICE"smilesmile

I have been using hearing aids for about 3 years now and find them very good I don't use them all the time as they tend to make my inner ear itchy and a bit sore, mine are the type that have a small clear plastic tube that comes from device into ear canal.

They definitely make a significant difference In a one to one conversation but I regularly have to remove them in large groups where a lot of people are talking.

Hi Guys , I am in the same boat , after visiting a private chap I realize how bad the government aids were, he tested my hearing and said to me" why have you got those hearing aids" it turns out after 10 years of wearing government aids that they are the wrong ones.my hearing is almost perfect but the clarity is shot due to working on the airport runways with aircraft noise.

I suffer with Industrial Deafness also and have to get the better half to repeat things all the time which drives us both mad. I am hopeless with background noise as I have trouble understanding what is said but if things are quiet then I could talk to someone in a whisper and understand it all.

I will have to do something about it, I spent too much time in GM loco engine rooms, You could yell and couldn't be heard they were that loud. I have a ringing in my ears all the time but it doesn't bother me.

Yes and better half calls it convenient deafness, Seems to be very common but you do wonder about the young ones today that have them boom boom thumpers in their cars. They will certainly be deaf in old age.

I have high freq loss.. have trouble with hearing kids and women..
Have aids and they do help but are always uncomfortable in the ear.

Learnt to only ask once for a repeat from SWMBO else I get an earful about not paying attention.. sometimes however she will realise I don't have a clue what she said so I get an earful for not telling her I didn't hear :(

If people get your attention before talking its so much easier as you can concentrate on what they are about to say (watch lips etc for clues) and not miss the first half of the sentence.. suggested that to SWMBO and that didn't go down well either.

Often its easier to smile and just pretend to be dumb..

cheers

Mike

I can't wait for the serenity of deafness.

Then I wouldn't have to endure the atrocious grammar of young people who for some reason dominate customer service positions.

I'll sign to them.... with two fingers.. or is it one these days.

Mike..............I suffer from the same deafness as you, but its feigned - most of the time I don't want to hear the constant yapping of the gandkids and wife.

And my wife reckons I am dumb LOL

Seriously though, most of us will suffer increasing deafness as we age or from noisy jobs we had many years ago when OH&S had never been heard of, let along ear muffs, safety glasses and chain mesh gloves (butchers)

Yes industrial deafness for me, printing machinery, the audiologist asked when he first tested me 'are the printing machines loud?' I said not any more!

Iana, I follow wt you are saying, have to deal with 92 YO/3YO father. He won't wear his hearing aids.
Fully agree about shouting, never works, just speak clearly help lots.

Any way I have decided that I can't hear what I type so all is OK.
