We are waiting out the school holidays & state election at the Boonah Showgrounds.
Friday afternoon a large group of 'vans & camper trailers set up at the opposite side of the show ring.
Saturday is expecting to get to near 40 degs.
By 9am it was obvious the group were The Historic Speedway Assoc. by the signs & vehicles about.
By 9.30am there were speedway cars blasting around the track.
When you think about the safety clothes they wear & the fact these are open top machines plus the temps expected. These guys are KEEN.
We closed up some windows because of the dust ( we are set up right next to the track ) & left to spend the day in A/Cond at a friends house. And left 'em to it.
Hope they are racing in the evening, would be good to watch -- in the cool.
Wow, I'd have been in seventh heaven, having spent most of my teenage years in the 60s at the old Westmead speedway in Sydney and also at the Sydney Showground. The speedcars didn't have cages then, only 'protection' for the driver was a small roll-over bar behind his head which almost always was way below the top of his helmet. Didn't seem to matter much as most only wore a lap belt and if the car rolled over their upper body was thrown to one side so they were hanging half out of the car if it landed upside down. Brings back memories of racing fuel, clumps of clay being spat over the fence if somebody went too high off the racing line (Westmead) and fine dust hanging in the air on a hot summer's night at the Showground... sighhhhh

Hey Joe.
Glad to have sparked those memories.
As a teen I used to go to the Archerfield (Brisbane ) Saturday afternoon "Test & tune" races ( Free ).
Thems were da days.
