Discovered new Ripoff

Seems a fair bit excessive, I use this site after I get my eyes tested, I get the prescription and jump online cheapest set I have brought thus far $56 nothing wrong with them and there are other on this site that have used them as well so I ask you??? name and shame these rip off merchants.

Mate; if you are in a fund of any kind go to specsavers. We get two pair each including all the checks for free every two yrs.

Just tell them that you would shop some where else and stick them where the sun won't shine

we us spec safers I've got bifocals and only less than $200
all them shops had it to good for many many years to rip us off
them frames cost them less than $50
same with the glases they use to be from glas this days you flat finding one that still suply real glasses
it's all plastic this days

Interested in the site you put on about the glasses how does it work do you send your script to them and then they fit them into frames. I have paid heaps for glasses in the past so know where you are coming from . Thanks in advance.

There is a mob called Zenni optical based in USA but glasses are sourced from China (as are most in Australia) - they offer bifocals starting at about $20 plus $10 shipping....single vision start at $6.95 - that's lens and frames.

Another vote for Zenni, brilliant glasses good service and the most expensive pair on their site is around $60 ! Say no more.

As for Spec Savers, my daughter has had nothing but problems with her glasses from them, first pair broke, replaced then same fault again, so she was advised to change the frames to different style, this time they didn't sit level on her face and the assistant tried to bend the frames and broke that pair !

To say she was not happy was an understatement, now uses Zenni and no problems so far.

Only downside is you have to have your prescription to order and they take around 10 days to arrive in oz.

I certainly hate to spend more than I need to - or should - on any product.

The cost of maintaining a 'medical professional' practice is not insignificant, but I also don't like to see products that seem to carry too much mark up.

However, if the purchasing choices expressed in this thread become the 'preferred' method of obtaining specs I see another industry/service in Straya suffering - and ultimately us suffering.

This means that optomertrists will only be there to do an eye test and provide a script which will then be used by the consumer to get the completed spectacles direct from overseas.

Who do you go to when the specs don't quite fit properly and need adjustment - or don't fit your head - or the lens has not been made to the script (which has happened to me more than once in my lifetime) - bit difficult to do on the internet.

I would suggest if this trend grows, as it quite probably is going to do, then optomertrists will not be there for the long term. They certainly do not make a profit on testing eyes and writing scripts. I believe they all simply bulk bill for that and make their profit on the provision of the actual item.

One wonders why an Strayan optomertrist does not just do the test, take the order, place it online with the "cheapo" chinese mob overseas, add their mark-up but still sell cheaper than all the other local optomertrists. Perhaps they are a bit concerned about quality and the need to provide 'warranty' on the product. Who knows, given the 'cheap' prices by Spec Savers - they may be doing that already.

So do we just keep taking our business to overseas providers and then join in the hullabullu when we lose our "in country" optical services?

But then it is not our problem ... it is the fault of the Government ... the Greens ... or the unions ... anyone but us - the buyer/consumer.

We certainly are a country that is going backwards faster than we realise. cry

Been buying my specs from Specsavers since they began - the service is terrific, choice of frames and prices is very good, after sales service - lost screws, bent arms etc. will be done by any of their stores all over the country. I think my last ones were two for $149 - good price for good looking frames.

Friend of mine used to go to Hong Kong a lot - she would buy half a dozen frames and go to her local optometrist and get lenses put in - frames cost her an average of $2 each!!!!! But I like to try frames on, and have them adjusted to fit, so SS it will be for me!!!

Don't get me started about opticians! I am a draftsman by trade and need deep lenses to avoid damaging my neck - moving the eye and not the neck all of the time. I cannot get glasses with a deep enough lense size (62 wide by 50deep is about right) enough anywhere - online or off, as I also need stainless steel frames (or titanium) nett result is I have not brought a pair of glasses for the last 6 years, they keep telling me to get my eyes checked but I won't give them that satisfaction until they can supply the frames!

Oh - I do check my eyesight enough that it is OK to drive by the way :)
