Hey Margaret & Greig. So exciting and great you have been so looking forward to this for so long!!

Enjoy WA (its a great place although not much to see in Perth city and CPs in the area are few and overpriced, so get out into the country as soon as possible. The south is beautiful (although full of families as its holiday time and the CPs really charge) and beautiful if you go north (don't go too far as its cyclone season) and stay on the coast so you get the sea winds. Too hot inland and very dry, so not much to see at the moment. Although Kalgoorlie is fun all year round for 3-4 days.

Wherever you go enjoy your time in WA and we all envy your wonderful train trip !!!!!!!!

Is this above a true statement.

I have just yesterday been in town with overseas visitors. Friends from the UK who visit their son in Noosa,  Qld.   They have a couple of days stop over with us en route.

They have been here to Perth four times in the past ten years.  Yesterday they commented about staying longer in Perth as it was so interesting  to them, they never have enough time to take it all in.

Enjoy the trip on the train and the tour.

Hi Mike and Ellie. We live in Perth and although its gone from the 19th century to the 20th, its a long way behind the likes of other cities like Sydney and Melbourne (taking into account population difference). The museum is an embarrassment - the displays are mouth eaten.

It is changing rapidly with the Sate govt and city council pouring in a lot of money to make it tourist (and local) attractive, but that's a couple of years away. I guess the only standout thing about Perth city is Kings Park - that is a world class visit. The beaches are no better than others about Aust.

Hate to bag my own city, but WA = Wait Awhile. Give it a couple more years and it will be a vibrant place

Gday Mike n Ellie

If you are staying in the Perth area for some time - check out Club Capricorn $25 per night (it is north of Perth, but just come down via Marmion Ave and then onto the freeway) Freeway goes all the way down south to Bunbury.

Here are a few suggestions - just taken my brother around...
) Fremantle Prison tour - several options
) Maritime Museum near the harbour- check out the submarine. There is also an older maritime museum which houses the Batavia nearby ($5 donation)
) Kings Park and the sky walk
) A drive up thru the vineyards in Upper Swan - plenty to visit. come back on Great Northern Hwy and check out the Cheese Factory.
) AQWA which is at Hillarys Boat Harbour
) Rottnest Island
) Take a boat trip down the Swan to Fremantle and come back via the Train.
) Another boat trip is the Wineries.
) Remember that the Cat buses in Psrth City are free.

Enjoy you hols.

I think you mean this for "Margaret" not Mike and Ellie

We live in Perth.

Actually "South Perth" which might possibly in the near future become "South Park" Within sight of the CBD.

I think Perth is a great place  with everything we require from a city within easy reach.   Never a dull moment for us. Arts, Culture, Music,  Beaches, Dining, History, Sailing, Bushwalking, Birdwatching, Friends, Family.  By comparison with other cities around Oz (and the World)  Perth is an easy city to get around.

All cities are interesting you have to go and look,   those overseas ones more interesting in many ways than Australia's.

Glen - have you actually been into and stayed at Club Capricorn??

We live in Yanchep (where this CP is). We know some of the "permanents" who are from interstate and stay here through lack of CP availability in Perth and all hate it. Drunks, drugs, rowdy parties and we tried it for 2 nights and the facilities were geriatric and filthy

 A few more:

  • Araluen Botanic Park in the Perth Hills
  • Serpentine Falls, Jarradale etc
  • Yanchep National Park
  • York (free camp in town) and Beverley (cheap CP in town)
  • New Norcia (you can camp in NN)  and Pinnacles (both do-able from Perth, given you only have 5 weeks)
  • Free camp at Marrinup and POW site
  • Just a whole day in Freemantle - and you wont see half of it
  • Any of the beaches if the weather is nice

Way back in the last century when I was working I spent a couple of years traveling back & forth between Brisvegas & Perth.

Every 5 weeks or so I had to spend several days in Perth.

This meant catching a mid Saturday morning flight from Bris, usually via Adelaide to Perth arriving after dinner.  A light room service meal & the complementary bottle of wine (just what I didn't need after several hours of free booze on the ride over) an early night to get ready for a day's touring round Perth.

I never tired of doing day tours and always found something interesting to do.  Meades? Seafood Resturant was a favorite.

Loved King's Park too.  I would often have the cab driver detour via KP on the way to the hotel.  A few minutes looking out over the view was a great way to end a long journey.  I used to stay in the older section of Parmellia? Hilton with all its heavy Jarra furniture & large rooms.  In the latter period I moved to a more homely place in Hay St.  It had a roman style pool in the basement which was great for relaxing late at night or after the long trip over from the East.

Of course I had to make up for it all by working from 6am through to past midnight (that's counting working lunch & dinners most days) until I flew home on Thursday.  Tried to avoid the red eye special.  I couldn't handle the 11pm departures direct to Bris & then straight to the office on arrival!

We have since been back in the van on three occasions & always find things to do & enjoy.

We love Perth.

Would love to do the train trip  ... Superior Gold Class of course!
