I had this in Petengails thread, but decided it may have taken his thread "off topic".
Horses for courses BUT going to the same place year after year after year!!! We took our 4 kids to different places and experiences. Due to business we only had a major holiday every 2nd year. Our adult kids who are now starting to bless us with grandchildren always say that we NEVER went on holidays we WENT on adventures.

Everyone is different what is enjoyable for one is an anathema to another. I for one could only bear to be at the Pilliga Bore for one night, while others stay for months, so to each their own.
Cheers

We don't have "holidays" since retirement 10 years ago. What we do is a way of life.
We have been back to the Kimberley several times in that period, but always find a new bit to explore.
Mind you, I do know retired folk who only go away for 4 weeks each year, 'cos that is how much "holiday" you can have each year. :D
While our kids were young we went to Streaky Bay with 2 other families every year for about 6 years. Our kids loved it. We lived in Melbourne and would come home for Christmas. In between we had holidays to Hall's Gap, Phillip Island, great Ocean road etc. Whether people go to the same place or different ones isn't a big deal. Giving kids the opportunity to explore life in a camp ground, sharing facilities, confined space and the great outdoors is really important.
kids today live in big houses with everything at their fingertips so living for a few weeks with basics is good for them With the added bonus of seeing our beautiful country.
For us as parents it gave us the knowledge and expertise to try tent camping in Europe at age 52. We did it first in 2001 for 10 weeks then 2007 then 2010. Now we have upgraded to the "motel on wheels" and are touring Oz once more.
What are holidays? A change of scenery and a change of 'job'. Just changing a daily routine can be a holiday. And yes, our kids also enjoyed holidays seeing something new every year. They haven't yet tried that with their own - preferring to come 'home' to Mum and Dad's every year.
No holidays here Paul, this full time grey nomad thing is 24/7 mate with no breaks, no annual leave, no sick leave, no RDO's and no public holidays. Hard stuff and I tell you that for free.
I will however continue doing it for some reason.

Actually I should have said we live where everyone else travels to have a holiday so we must be on permanent holiday too! (We're always glad when the 'tourists' have gone home!)
